The ashes of two-time Olympic figure skating champions Lyudmila Belousova and Oleg Protopopov will be buried in Russia. All necessary agreements have been reached for the repatriation of the bodies, the athletes’ relatives said. TASS.
Oleg Protopopov lived until November 2023. He lived in Switzerland and was buried in Grindelwald. His ashes were buried in the city’s prefecture. In 2022, he bequeathed his ashes to be buried in the Volkovskoye cemetery in Russia, next to his wife Lyudmila Belousova, whose ashes he kept at home.
“Now we can say that after so many months the situation has improved. Relatives said that all agreements have been reached and in the near future the ashes of Oleg Alekseevich and Lyudmila Evgenievna will be delivered to St. Petersburg.
Relatives announced that the athletes will be buried in the Volkovsky cemetery as a legacy to the famous skater. This is expected to happen on September 11.
Belousova and Protopopov became Olympic champions at the Innsbruck (1964) and Grenoble (1968) Games. The couple won four consecutive gold medals at the World Championships (1965–1968) and European Championships (1965–1968), and also won silver medals at the World Championships three times and at the European Championships four times.
