Chess player Amina Abakarova, who added mercury to her rival Umaiganat Osmanova, said that she did it because of personal enmity. The athlete’s words are quoted “Dagestan Afternoon”.
“I told her things that I didn’t tell anyone, and then she gossiped about me with others and for some reason mentioned my mother. Umaiganat doesn’t even know her,” Abakarova said.
At the same time, he noted that he did not want to poison Osmanova, but only to scare her.
“I played there myself, my student played there. I didn’t want to harm, I didn’t even think about it,” Abakarova added.
The tournament took place on August 2 in Makhachkala. Before the start of the competition, Abakarova reviewed the list of athletes, went to a certain table, poured the poisonous substance on the table and rubbed the liquid with a chess piece. Eyewitnesses reported that Osmanova, who was sitting at this table, became ill. The organizers of the competition reviewed the security camera footage and called the police. At the same time, the injured athlete continued her performance and received a prize.
Formerly Russian Chess Federation (RFC) suspended Abakarov.
