Honored figure skating coach of the USSR Tatyana Tarasova believes that Ukrainian figure skaters Violetta Serova and Ivan Khobta should be disqualified for refusing to congratulate Anastasia Metelkina and Luka Berulava, representing Georgia, on their victory in the Junior Grand Prix. Tarasova quotes his words RIA News.
“To hell with them! Politics cannot be mixed with sports. They should be disqualified for violating the rules of conduct in competitions and the problem will be resolved,” Tarasova said.
Ukrainian athletes won silver medals at the tournament held in Budapest. At the awards ceremony, the couple representing Georgia hugged the bronze medal-winning Canadian duo Martine Ariono Kent and Charles Laliberte-Laurent and then approached the Ukrainian couple, but Serova and Khobta refused to contact the winners of the competition.
Metelkina has been competing for Georgia since 2020, and Berulava since 2019. Both athletes are natives of Russia.
At the end of February 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) appealed to international sports federations, recommending that Russian and Belarusian athletes not be allowed to participate in any competitions. The International Skating Union (ISU) suspended Russian and Belarusian athletes from competitions.
