The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland explained why it opposes the participation of athletes from Russia and Belarus in international competitions, even under a neutral flag. Translating the description text RIA Novosti Sports Regarding the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“We want to emphasize that it is not their nationality that determines the role of athletes, but their sponsorship/support by their government or business.
We believe that now is not the time to think about the possibility of Russian and Belarusian athletes returning to the Olympics in any status. “Although the IOC has yet to make a final decision, we urge it to abandon its plans and return to its original, well-established position.”
On January 25, the International Olympic Committee announced that it was considering the possibility of allowing Russian athletes who did not support a special operation in Ukraine to participate in international competitions with neutral status. In addition, Western countries demanded clarification to determine the neutral status for the Russians. The IOC promised to discuss the admission of the Russians on March 28.
Recall that the head of the IOC, Thomas Bach, noted that Russian athletes opposed the principle of “collective guilt”, but the organization forbade support for the SVO.
Alexandra Xantaki, formerly UN Special Rapporteur on Cultural Rights said about discussing the return of Russians to international tournaments with foreign athletes.
