“The Hierarchical Church, as argued by PO, unnecessarily favors Law and Justice (which, incidentally, is not true), which is why true Catholics, true Christians who love God and the activities and teachings of St. John Paul II should not have to vote for Law and Justice – exactly such a logic in which you “want to eat a cake and have a cake” – that is, on the one hand be Christian and Catholic, on the other – when there is no significant support, signals to people to turn away from Law and Justice and also see this “open to people” mindset of the Civic Platform” – says Prof. Arkadiusz Jabłoński, sociologist, lecturer at the Catholic University of Lublin.
wPolityce.pl: PO President Donald Tusk has been fond of referring to Catholicism recently: “Are you Catholic? Do you understand Jesus Christ? You can’t vote for PiS” (recently also for Konfederacja. Who exactly is he addressing such statements to?
Prof. Arkadiusz Jablonski: It seems to me that Donald Tusk is trying to hit the groups of PiS voters by convincing them that a true Christian, a Catholic, is not wholly affiliated with the Church, but that if he wants to be faithful to Christian principles, he definitely shouldn’t vote for PiS.
This is probably an attempt to discourage the Church, especially young people, but now it is done in the name of Christian values. And if there’s a contradiction here, it’s no longer my fault. Apparently Donald Tusk’s PR supporters came up with the idea that you can’t directly attack the church, Catholics, but you can, in the name of Christian principles, discourage them from the church, which they associate with PiS.
Or maybe Civic Platform was afraid of the consequences of TVN and Agora’s latest attack on St. John Paul II?
The platform wants to show at all costs that it is not anti-Christian, anti-Catholic, but only against pathologies in the Church. These pathologies are the result of the functioning of hierarchs and clergy – that is, of the hierarchical church. On the other hand, as PO argues, the Hierarchical Church unnecessarily favors Law and Justice (which is not true anyway), and therefore true Catholics, true Christians who love God and the activity and teachings of St. John Paul II should not have to vote for Law and Justice – exactly such a logic in which you “want to eat a cake and have a cake” – that is, on the one hand be Christian and Catholic, on the other – when there is no significant support, signals to people to turn away from Law and Justice and also see this “open to people” mindset of the Civic Platform.
Donald Tusk has also tried to demonstrate in the past that he is not anti-Catholic or anti-Christian – it suffices to mention a pre-election church wedding or home altar photo shoots.
Yes, but then he was actually playing for the Conservative electorate. Now there are no illusions about support in the conservative-liberal camp. He sees these people running away from him and rather tries to flatter this left wing, according to this story, which is also not alien to the left – that if Christ were alive today, he would bend over all the humbled, all those who are treated unjustly, is excluded. And this is a story close to Tusk.
The PO leader prefers not to appear in any liturgical context – at church ceremonies or gatherings in Częstochowa – but tries in his own way, in an eristic way, to give the impression that Christian truth is not on the side of those stands. belonging to the Catholic Church.
PO politicians have been talking more and more about a coalition between PiS and the Confederation lately, and PiS is also hearing such a solution as a possible contingency. To what extent is this possible and should it be done at all?
I think we’ll see if such a coalition will come to fruition. Of course, everything depends on the election result and if it is necessary to form a coalition, it seems that the Confederacy would be one of the alternatives that Law and Justice will face if it fails to obtain the required majority.
On the part of the PO, an attempt is made to link the Confederacy to Law and Justice on the principle of “argumentum ad fascism”, i.e. making the Confederacy fascists after some unfortunate statements by one of the leaders, and then indicating that this style of thinking will also be used or implemented by Law and Justice.
The Confederation, apart from the stupid statements of some leaders, not fully thought through, perhaps also deliberately so radical as to appear on social media, today quite a liberal electorate, people who are tired of both PO and PiS, and it is completely no electorate of fierce, radical people.
What would such a government look like? Wouldn’t we be dealing with a kind of coalition with the LPR and Self-Defense from the time of the “first PiS”?
I think such a risk always exists, of course, but today I think that what Confederation politicians are presenting today is at a slightly higher level than Samoobrona. Please note that today we honor the late Mr. Andrzej Lepper than it was during his presence in politics. At that time he was presented as a dangerous demagogue, and today many of the issues he raised at that time – such as the treatment of Polish agriculture, various kinds of predatory activities of circles related to finance or banking, turn out not to be to be. as far from the truth as it seemed at the time.
Andrzej Lepper broke a certain political consensus, and as a man he unfortunately also had many flaws. It seems that today among politicians associated with the Confederacy, although some of their statements may irritate, one can notice such pro-state thinking.
Or maybe PiS still has a chance to win on its own – without entering into coalitions, which can be risky for the ruling party, with groups it differs so fundamentally from, for example, when it comes to helping Ukraine?
All polls indicate that Law and Justice is close to exceeding or not exceeding this probability of achieving an absolute majority. So the odds are high, especially that the opposition camp is clearly in disarray and there are no signs of an increase in support, but rather very dangerous signs of losing the electorate. This has already happened to Mr Szymon Hołownia, and to a significant extent to the left. At the moment, only the PO manages to maintain a more or less stable support base at the level of 25+, but a downward trend is also noticeable.
While maintaining its position of 35+ percent. of support, there is a chance for PiS to get the necessary majority.
Thank you very much for the interview.
