Ziobro criticizes Agnieszka Holland and presses Tusk to respond

In Otwock, Minister of Justice and Attorney General Zbigniew Ziobro stated that Donald Tusk, a Polish politician seeking the role of Prime Minister and a leading force in Poland, has a clear moral duty to protest and defend Polish soldiers and officers. The remarks came as Ziobro commented on statements by director Agnieszka Holland.

Ziobro, accompanied by MP Dariusz Olszewski, laid wreaths in front of the monument honoring the Katyn massacre victims from the Otwock district.

Holland accused of contaminating the Polish uniform

Ziobro asserted that Holland’s recent statements defiled the Polish uniform and insulted Polish soldiers and border guards. He described the remarks as unprecedented and unacceptable, claiming they reduce defenders to the role of sadists and even comparing them, in his words, to German Nazis who sent Jews to death camps.

– said MP Dariusz Olszewski before the wreaths were laid. He added that these are Stalinist propaganda methods that aim to destroy political opponents.

This conduct was described as unacceptable by the minister.

Ziobro shows a portrait of the director’s father

Henryk Holland, described as a communist, reportedly joined the Red Army and, after the war, brought totalitarianism to the country via Soviet tanks.

– he said, presenting a portrait linked to Agnieszka Holland’s father. This led him to suggest that such behavior should not surprise anyone.

The Minister noted he did not know the full biography of Holland’s family but clarified that Mrs. Holland should be judged for her own actions rather than her family history. He argued that her behavior reflects Stalinist propaganda methods that label opponents as fascists, a tactic once used by Stalinists.

Holland language compared to Goebbels

Ziobro stressed that, as a Polish politician, he cannot agree with language that resembles Goebbels’ methods. There is no permission to direct such words at Polish soldiers and border guards who protect national security. These are young people, often very young, and the duty to defend them against insults remains paramount, especially when directed at Mrs. Holland.

The minister emphasized he does not know Holland’s father’s writings and again stated that one cannot connect his actions to Mrs. Holland’s behavior. He asserted that she alone is responsible for her deeds. The rhetoric used mirrors Stalinist propaganda by labeling opponents as fascists, a tactic historically employed in similar confrontations.

Tusk urged to protest

Ziobro argued that since Holland and her circle enjoy broad support from Donald Tusk, the Civic Platform leader has a fundamental duty to protest and distance himself from Holland’s statements. If Tusk has not yet spoken out, Ziobro suggested he is giving a weak impression. As a Polish politician aiming to lead the country, he has a clear moral obligation to protest and defend Polish soldiers and officers stationed on the Polish-Belarusian border concerns about national safety, according to Ziobro.

– said the Minister of Justice.

Ziobro expressed hope that Tusk would take a firm, moral stand and clearly distance himself from what he called scandalous and indefensible statements by Mrs. Holland. If no stand is taken, Ziobro implied, Tusk would be seen as sharing the sentiment behind those words.
