Parliamentary leaders have begun outlining a plan for a shared nominee to serve as Ombudsman for Children, the role created to replace the outgoing Mikołaj Pawlak. Media coverage points to several strong possibilities: Dr. Konrad Ciesiołkiewicz, Professor Marek Konopczyński, and Dr. Grzegorz Wrona as the leading contenders, with the latter positioned as the socially oriented candidate.

From the coalition perspective, members of the Citizens Coalition, Third Way, and New Left have until the coming Monday afternoon to submit their nominations for the post. Early signals indicate a preference for a united candidate, with Dr. Konrad Ciesiołkiewicz and Professor Marek Konopczyński receiving the strongest support. While both have stressed that no final choice has been made, they have also asserted their readiness to take on the responsibilities should the opportunity arise.

Ciesiołkiewicz has earned backing from a diverse group, including representatives tied to the Akcja Demokracja movement, the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights, the Polish Teachers’ Union, the Geremek Foundation, and Free Courts. The endorsement of Konopczyński is similarly explicit, indicating broad political and civic confidence in their candidacy.

Willingness of candidates

A broad spectrum of child and youth organizations, Korczak committees, and more than fifty members of the Order of the Smile have publicly expressed their support for the candidacy, underscoring the perceived need for renewal and decisive action within the office. The claimant asserts that the Ombudsman for Children should be empowered with renewed authority and a clear mandate to advance the rights of all children. The candidate emphasizes the belief that their experience and competencies would restore confidence in the office. If given the chance, they are ready to lead.

These sentiments are echoed by the professor who is positioned as a social candidate within the field, reinforcing the belief that a capable and principled leader is essential for the office of the Children’s Ombudsman.

The RDP’s social candidate, Grzegorz Wrona, is described as a doctor of law, a recognized specialist, and a supervisor with expertise in addressing domestic violence. His professional profile signals a focus on safeguarding vulnerable groups and ensuring robust protections for children and families.

The initiation of the nomination process for the Children’s Ombudsman has been among the first topics presented by the President of the Sejm to the parliamentary clubs, signaling a proactive approach to securing a capable successor to Mikołaj Pawlak. The current tenure of Pawlak is noted to conclude on December 14, 2023, marking a transitional moment for the office.
