Vox sparked another fire incident yesterday at Consell, a development shared by President Carlos Mazón with his Popular Party allies. In the middle of a harsh summer marked by violence against women, Elisa Núñez, head of Justice and Home Affairs, a department currently controlled by the far right, announced the Complaints and Aid Offices continuum yesterday. While the Valencian Community tells Victims of Gender-Based Violence that the three regional offices located in the capital cities are under review for continuity, they also note that the powers of these offices may be expanded or reduced where appropriate. Mazón and his circle rejected the notion that Núñez’s remarks questioned the continuity of this office network, stressing that nothing will be removed.

Since the project began in 2019, these three offices have assisted about 4,000 women, with roughly 2,400 who have come forward as complainants. It is worth noting that the Alicante and Castellón offices have been operating for only a year each.

Refuses a “definitive” answer

Núñez told the media that a fully definitive and reliable answer could not yet be given on the future of these offices because the matter is still under review and their maintenance hinges on the allocated budget. The department plans to begin the process of evaluating regional budget usage soon.

“It’s been about a hundred days since I took office, and we are currently examining the different possibilities that sit above these offices,” he explained.

The councillor also acknowledged that among the proposals there is a real possibility of retaining the offices and of extending or reducing their powers, but the review is ongoing. The continuity of the network remains unsettled.

Núñez stated that he cannot confirm the future of these offices that support women who are victims of sexist violence because they are preparing the Generalitat budget draft to request from the Ministry of Finance.

Other Justice sources indicated that these remarks do not imply an imminent closure, but no commitment was made regarding continuity. “The issue needs thorough study to guarantee the best protection for crime victims,” the ministry said. Mazón’s circle argued that Núñez did not question the continuity of these offices, noting that the powers over them fall under Susana Camarero’s office and the Department of Equality. They concluded that nothing will be destroyed.

As part of the developments, Consell appointed Belén Pulgar as the new general manager for Attention to Victims of Crime, a decision made by Vox. The following day, a judge highlighted this appointment as part of the reason for the lack of a clear position on the network of offices, since Pulgar has not yet acknowledged the ministry.

Despite this, the profile of the new general manager was noted as a supporter of the first victim-support office in Spain. Sources describe the situation as a staged event with no intention of ending the existence of the offices, though details about gender violence remain unspoken.

Bernabé won’t agree to “step back”

In the wake of these statements, Núñez met with Pilar Bernabé, the Government delegate in the Valencian Community. While the failures of these offices have yet to be fully disclosed, attendees close to the meeting say Bernabé conveyed to the minister a commitment to maintain maximum coordination across institutions on all matters related to sexist violence and to stay alert, resisting any move that could be seen as backing away from the fight.
