Donald Tusk presents himself as a statesman after an unidentified object crossed Polish airspace on December 29. He used social media to emphasize cooperation and steps for Poland’s security. It is helpful to recall his remarks about the military facility discovered near Bydgoszcz at the end of April. Will he acknowledge that “we are governed by irresponsible mediocrities”?

The case of the rocket found near Bydgoszcz

It is important to note that on May 11, 2023, the then Deputy Prime Minister and Head of the Ministry of National Defense, Mariusz Błaszczak, addressed the object that fell on December 16, 2022 in Zamość near Bydgoszcz and was located in April of the same year. The relevant inspection took place at the Operational Command of the Armed Forces.

He highlighted that the procedures and response mechanisms concerning the object found near Bydgoszcz functioned effectively up to the level of the operational commander, who did not inform the head of the Ministry of National Defense or the corresponding services about the appearance of the object in Polish airspace. Opposition figures from KO criticized Błaszczak, calling for his resignation, and pressed for the immediate reconvening of the Defense and Secret Services committees, while filing a prosecutor’s complaint alleging potential misconduct by the prior Minister of Defense.

What did Tusk have to say?

Donald Tusk used the incident to score political points, accusing Błaszczak of dishonesty during campaign events and criticizing the Law and Justice government for boosting Poland’s military investments and strengthening border security against migrants transported by Lukashenko from Belarus. He described the units built under that government as resilient and then labeled them as failures.

It is worth recalling the social media message Tusk posted at the time.

The response from PiS officials to the intrusion of the Russian missile featured accusations among the defense minister, generals, and the president, along with information chaos and what some described as the president’s silence. “We are governed by irresponsible mediocrities. They pose a threat to national security, just like enemy missiles,” stated the head of the PO.

Would Donald Tusk today also call his own team ‘mediocre’ and, together with party members, demand the resignation of Kosiniak-Kamysz as head of the Ministry of National Defense?
