Socialist Patricia Blanquer speaks at the end of an interview conducted at the BILGI facilities on the occasion of 23J.

What is at stake in the 23rd general election?

The nation pursues a model of Spain that reflects its people’s needs. Different political options offer distinct visions for the country and its European direction. The current government under the PSOE has shown there is a clear commitment to safeguarding citizens during hard times. Spain has invested heavily in recovery, setting an example in pandemic response. This year’s outcomes surpassed economic projections, and families received support when they needed it most.

What do you mean when you say not all political options stand for the same thing?

The PP has focused on seizing power, voting against progress during crises such as the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. They now appear to oppose women’s rights and LGBT rights, and they have questioned the importance of recognizing gender-based violence. The debate around violence against women remains a critical issue for democracy, and voters will weigh these positions on the 23rd.

At the Cortes this week, Vox, including the President, backed away from protesting another gender-based crime…

Careful opposition to gender-based violence can harm institutions. Backsliding on progress weakens democracy. The upcoming vote in 23J becomes essential, for instance in Valencia where a representative failed to condemn a sexist murder, a stance unacceptable in any democracy.

What do you think when you hear that Sanchismo should be repealed?

Sanchismo has championed rising the minimum wage, protecting people from hardship, introducing a basic income, reducing taxes for lower earners, taxing energy companies and banks, and advancing labor reform. Critics who want to repeal these measures often resort to humiliation and division. The leadership of Pedro Sánchez prioritized tangible improvements for people.

Which direction should social progress go?

The core commitments must be implemented across all conventional benchmarks. The PSOE is framed as a national project with plans to move toward a more prosperous future. The key priorities include reducing inequality, promoting social and regional cohesion, fighting climate change, and accelerating digital transformation. Spain stands among the world’s most connected nations. Starting at the 23rd general election, the path forward should advance these pillars while building a country project that embodies them.

PSPV accuses PP of “wanting back to Coastal Act 2013”

After January 23, what role will pacts play, and where do the socialists stand on this?

The focus is on what results, not just who is involved. The Right has signaled a road that could jeopardize long-standing rights. The PSOE has shown commitment through reforms in the labor market, fair wages, parental rights, and energy investments, underscoring a sustainable project for the future.

One of the most worrying issues in Alicante province is water…

Water management has seen more action under the PSOE, including timely transfers and infrastructure investment. Criticism aimed at inaction by opponents misses the record: drought remains a challenge, but the government has pursued reliable water policy and dependable transfer options to support communities.

Another pressing matter is infrastructure. What is the outlook?

State investments show a larger scale relative to the past. Progress includes the liberalization of major routes and ongoing studies on important corridors. The Mediterranean Corridor has moved forward significantly, with a substantial share of studies completed and a strong expectation of progress by year-end.

How would you explain that the province trails in investment?

Budget snapshots reflect yearly opportunities. The province already holds foundational infrastructure that others may not. Socialist representatives have led regional demands, with planning at the core. Investments, even when small per year, accumulate to meaningful outcomes, and much of the Mediterranean Corridor funding benefits the broader area, including Valencia. The strategy emphasizes targeted development and transparent budgeting.

With all this, what is the forecast for the polls?

Until the 21st, the focus remains on communicating what has been accomplished during difficult times and what lies ahead. The choice is clear: continue a forward path or revert backward. The political project is presented with clarity, while opponents lean on attack rather than a defined platform. A hopeful outlook persists for victory, grounded in accountability and concrete results.
