A heated exchange unfolded on Radio ZET as PiS MEP Prof. Karol Karski confronted MP Krzysztof Śmiszek from the Left and MP Dariusz Joński from KO over the Justice Fund. Karski described the involvement of two KO lawyers, Roman Giertych and Jacek Dubois, and labeled a commentator, Tomasz Mraz, as someone who made claims that could not be easily verified.
During the program “7 Day of the Week” hosted by Andrzej Stankiewicz on Radio ZET, the discussion framed the Justice Fund dispute around testimony given by Tomasz Mraz, a former FS chief, who accused the current management of influencing the outcomes of the Fund’s competitions and pointed to possible interference by political actors.
Sovereign Poland under scrutiny
Deputy Justice Minister Krzysztof Śmiszek outlined the ministry’s actions in the matter.
A dedicated team of prosecutors, led by Prosecutor Marzena Kowalska, has been formed within the National Public Prosecution Service to gather evidence. Śmiszek noted that he does not have direct telephone access to public prosecutors, unlike some other officials, and emphasized the need for formal channels of communication rather than informal lines of contact.
– said Krzysztof Śmiszek from the Left.
In the coming days, requests to lift immunities from certain individuals are expected to be submitted to the Sejm.
– added Śmiszek.
Parliamentary Investigative Committee Chairman Dariusz Joński pointed out who, in his view, should lose immunities amid the confusion surrounding the Justice Fund.
Speaking with limited information from public media, Joński named several ministers as potential targets, including Minister Marcin Romanowski, Minister Michał Woś, and, if justified, Minister Zbigniew Ziobro.
– he indicated.
Assessment of the Supreme Audit Office
Karski was later asked by Stankiewicz whether he would defend his coalition partners on this issue.
In the discussion, the two KO lawyers were described as engaged in provocative remarks that were difficult to verify, according to Karski.
– explained Prof. Karski.
For two years, the provocative recordings captured his superior and colleagues, with many controversial statements highlighted in these recordings, Karski noted.
The discussion sparked laughter among coalition members when Karski spoke, after which Śmiszek responded.
He dismissed the remarks as a poor attempt to defend what he called a pathology, expressing strong disagreement.
Stankiewicz pressed Karski on how he would address the issue of Deputy Minister from Sovereign Poland allegedly manipulating the still-unscheduled match.
Under current rules, funds are managed by the minister, and a formal procedure exists to guide the minister’s choice. This procedural note was also referenced by the Supreme Audit Office.
– Karski stated.
The process is not a matter of arbitrary distribution within the ministry. It is a political procedure, Joński countered.
Stankiewicz also noted that the Supreme Audit Office had not concluded that the Justice Fund’s operations were perfectly fair, and that the audit highlighted concerns about potential corruption mechanisms linked to ministerial oversight.
