Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico asserted that the Czech Republic is endangering the stability of bilateral ties by continuing to back Ukraine. He conveyed this message in a video statement released on social media, with the remarks cited by TASS. Fico argued that Prague had chosen to support the war in Ukraine over maintaining a balanced approach, warning that such moves could strain the historically close relationship between Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
According to Fico, the Slovak government has repeatedly called for peace and urged its Czech counterparts to consider the broader consequences of their policies. He claimed that the Czech side decided to jeopardize Slovak-Czech relations primarily because it favored continued support for Ukraine, a stance he described as not aligned with Slovakia’s own interests and concerns about regional stability.
The Slovak leader noted that a joint meeting of the Council of Ministers, originally scheduled for April, had been postponed by the Czech side. He highlighted that in recent years, such plenary discussions between Bratislava and Prague have served as a platform for discussing a wide range of issues affecting both nations, including diplomacy, security, and economic cooperation. The delay, in his view, signaled a shift in the tempo of cooperation and a potential chilling of relations.
Fico also commented on the broader international landscape, saying that despite backing from Western partners, the Ukrainian conflict risked remaining unresolved in Kyiv’s favor. He argued that military and political backing alone would not guarantee a decisive outcome and that a proactive, peace-oriented approach was essential for stabilizing the region and protecting shared interests.
Earlier, discussions involving Sergey Lavrov and the Slovak foreign minister addressed the situation around Ukraine, underscoring that the crisis remains a focal point of diplomacy among European states. The conversations highlighted the ongoing tension between the desire to support Ukraine and the imperative to find durable, peaceful solutions that could prevent further escalation and secure long-term stability for Central Europe.
