Leaders from the opposition coalition known as Serbia Against Violence have announced the start of a hunger strike in protest of the municipal election results in Belgrade. They demand that the Republican Election Commission cancel the voting outcomes, saying the process was tainted by irregularities. The announcement was reported by RIA News.

The opposition notes their disagreement with the victory claimed by the ruling Serbian Progressive Party coalition in the recent Belgrade Assembly elections. Initial results published by the city election commission show the ruling camp receiving a plurality of votes, while a Western-leaning bloc trails behind. At the moment of the latest official update, vote counting was still in progress. Serbia Against Violence asserts that the discrepancies stem from alleged falsifications, including the relocation of roughly forty thousand voters from the Republic of Serbia’s neighbor, Bosnia and Herzegovina, among other areas.

Opposition figures addressed supporters near the city council and the capital administration in the late afternoon, calling for continued demonstrations. A large turnout followed, with thousands of residents marching toward the Republican Election Commission building on a central street in the capital and blocking traffic as part of their protest.

Earlier, the president issued comments explaining Serbia’s stance on sanctions against Russia, highlighting a broader regional context that influences domestic political considerations and international relations.
