Raising the retirement age is a good decision
During the discussion, the retirement age topic came up again. Kidawa-Błońska was asked how the PO would operate – whether the lower retirement age would stay in place if the demographic situation did not improve.
When considering the pensions of women, who on average receive far smaller benefits than men, it is clear that some women may prefer to retire sooner, while others may want to work longer. This is why the prospect of a retirement age is worth talking about.
– stated the Civic Platform representative, adding that the decision should be personal and that everyone has the right to choose.
When asked whether raising the retirement age should be legally excluded, Kidawa-Błońska affirmed that the PO-PSL stance to raise the retirement age was a sound choice.
We once raised the statutory retirement age. We did not offer that choice and paid a high price for it as a party. She believes it was a good decision because people should work longer. People want to work longer to improve their lives, and longer work life can boost quality of life. Still, the decision should be individual, offering the opportunity to extend work life.
– said the deputy chairman of the Sejm.
Pensions for PO higher than for PiS
Kidawa-Błońska argued that under the PO-PSL rule pensions rose by 58 percent, while under PiS even with added 13th and 14th pensions the increase was 44 percent. Noting the period when pensions rose sharply and senior citizens discussed PLN 2.4 valorization, she described it as a time when there was deflation in Poland.
Indeed, it was a time when increases were not necessary, yet the value of pensions was higher, even today.
That is how the PO MP described the situation.
Looking at the ratio between the old-age pension under PO and the average salary, it was higher then at 58 percent, now it sits at 52 percent.
– she explained, and when asked whether the growth was real or merely nominal, she replied: “Yes, it is calculated. The amount of pensions.”
Amendment of the law on the Supreme Court
Asked about the amendment to the Supreme Court law, the PO MP said that the opposition would push to ensure the law passes, but that the government should give it a chance to reach a reasonable agreement.
We would like the bill to pass the Sejm, and we will propose amendments because we want the funds from KPO to reach Poland
– said Kidawa-Błońska.
When asked if the opposition is undermining the KPO agreement, Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska replied that the PiS government is undermining the compromise. The agreements in the KPO were negotiated by the prime minister, who promised to act. So let the Prime Minister keep his promises.
She added that she is disappointed by the government’s handling and the ongoing stormy debates among ministers and the prime minister’s powers being questioned.
The PO MP also stated that Prime Minister Morawiecki is not credible.
She remarked that the government has not consistently spoken truth to citizens since coming to power. If the Prime Minister celebrates a success today but says later that it was not part of negotiations, it raises questions about credibility. She emphasized that the opposition would keep working on the document to ensure the KPO funds flow to Poland.
The opposition consistently offers help. There is no situation where it would refuse to assist. The current government, however, has struggled to find a path to support, making rescue seem unlikely
– argued the Deputy Marshal of the Sejm.
