Ladies and gentlemen, this is politics.

The scene in the Sejm unfolded with the sense that governments change and political tides shift. PiS president Jarosław Kaczyński spoke after Monday’s vote, reiterating that the process of government turnover is a routine part of political life and not a rare anomaly. He commented on the Sejm’s failure to grant a vote of confidence to Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki’s government, framing it as a moment that will be remembered in the wider arc of Polish democracy.

In Monday’s session, the Sejm declined to approve a vote of confidence for Morawiecki’s cabinet. With that, the chamber will now drive the process of selecting the next Prime Minister and government. The majority bloc, built by KO, Third Way and the Left, has identified Donald Tusk as their lead candidate.

“There is politics in every question and every turn.”

Journalists in the Sejm pressed Kaczyński on whether the outcome was disappointing. He reaffirmed his stance: the cycle of governance changes is a feature of the political system, not an exception.

“There is politics in every move,” he stated, underscoring that changes in leadership are a natural part of parliamentary life. He cautioned that the implications of this shift require careful consideration, while expressing hope that the process would unfold without harming the country’s democratic foundations.

“We will take consequences against you first.”

At one point, AgroUnia leader Michał Kołodziejczak, a KO MP, asked Kaczyński whether consequences would follow should grain from Ukraine be imported into Poland. In response, the PiS president warned that consequences would be imposed, signaling a firm stance on the issue.

Asked whether he had achieved the Poland of his dreams, Kaczyński replied that such a dream would be a Poland with politicians who act in the national interest rather than on the orders of foreign interests.

When pressed on whether power within the party might pass to another person or how long he would remain at the helm of PiS, Kaczyński pointed to the party’s statute, indicating that all decisions would align with its rules and procedures.

“You are joking.”

In response to a question about congratulating Donald Tusk, who is likely to assume the role of prime minister, Kaczyński replied with a blunt, “You are joking.”

During Monday’s Sejm session, members of parliament prepared to elect the prime minister in the second constitutional step. This would be followed by a debated discussion and then a formal vote on the choice of prime minister.

On Tuesday morning, a plan was set for the new prime minister to present the action program and the government’s composition, including the proposed Cabinet. The day’s schedule stated that a vote would occur in the late afternoon, at roughly 4 p.m.

In Poland, the Sejm elects the prime minister and the ministers to form the Council of Ministers by an absolute majority, provided at least half of the legally required deputies are present. This process marks a pivotal moment in Poland’s parliamentary rhythm and the ongoing evolution of its political leadership.
