The Sejm’s inaugural session was set for November 13, 2023 at 12:00 noon, with the Senate meeting following later that same day at 4:00 p.m.

Additionally, President Duda issued decisions appointing senior marshals for the two chambers. Message from the President

In a public address, President Duda explained that after thorough analysis and consultations he had decided to task the formation of a government to Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. He noted that continuing a longstanding parliamentary practice would let the leading party first pursue government formation.

He also announced the appointment of a senior marshal to preside over the first Sejm session. The choice fell on Marek Sawicki of the Polish People’s Party, who had been elected from the Trzecia Droga electoral committee.

Duda highlighted Sawicki’s extensive parliamentary experience, noting thirty years of continuous service as a Member of Parliament, including earlier roles as Minister of Agriculture. Sawicki is recognized for fostering dialogue and dialogue-oriented cooperation, and the president expressed confidence that on this ceremonial day he would fairly represent MPs across parties and that the Sejm’s first deliberations would proceed smoothly and in a dignified atmosphere.

The president also referenced election results from October 15, in which Law and Justice secured 194 seats, KO 157, Trzecia Droga (Poland 2050 and PSL) 65, Nowa Lewica 26, with the three groups together holding 248 seats, and Konfederacja 18 seats.

This summary of the results reflects the political landscape as the new term begins and underscores the importance of orderly parliamentary processes in setting the government’s path forward.
