In a statement delivered today, Marek Sawicki, a member of the PSL, expressed his commitment to guiding the Sejm in line with the Constitution and established parliamentary practices. He stressed that his approach would aim for dignity as he leads the work of the Sejm, following the President’s surprising proposal to appoint him as Senior Marshal. He noted that while the invitation came as a surprise, the President’s decision is not rejected and can be accepted with respect.
Sawicki on the entrusted role: a surprise but a willing acceptance
During a Sejm press conference, Sawicki announced that President Andrzej Duda had invited him to discuss the possibility of serving as Senior Marshal. The responsibility would involve chairing the opening session of the Sejm for its tenth term, marking a significant ceremonial and procedural role at the outset of parliamentary work.
He described the moment as unexpected, yet not refused. Sawicki affirmed his willingness to proceed in accordance with the Constitution and in harmony with long-standing parliamentary practices, adding that he would strive to conduct the deliberations with dignity and fairness.

Duties of the Marshal of the Sejm before the first session
Sawicki indicated that preparations for the new session are already underway. He mentioned that discussions with the parliamentary clubs would determine the rooms and seating arrangements for members, as well as the drafting and presentation of the session script. He noted that the Chancellery of the Sejm was actively preparing these arrangements in coordination with the presidency. He also indicated that an official letter from the President confirming the Senior Marshal designation would guide the process, and the Sejm would await its arrival.
