Polish opposition flags missed chance to block treaty changes
Paweł Jabłoński argues that Donald Tusk’s government did not seize the chance to halt the next phase in the treaty amendment process. A single objection from one EU member state was enough to derail the move, according to Jabłoński. He conveyed his assessment after a decision by Tusk’s government, announced on the X platform, to proceed with the next step. The PiS lawmaker warns that the plan now is to convene the Convention by the European Council, a move he sees as critical to shaping the treaty agenda.
Today, the government representative at the EU Council meeting did not push to remove the item from the agenda. The record shows only a minimal declaration was submitted, which does not suspend the proceedings. The next step calls for the European Council to hold a Convention, and this would proceed by a simple majority of votes. This is the point the commentary focuses on as the process advances.

No problem
Jabłoński points to what he views as a lack of opposition from Tusk’s government. He also notes that a PiS deputy accuses the prime minister of lying.
Today could have been stopped with the resistance of a single state. The PiS deputy vows that the issue will not be set aside and insists that the Polish public deserves explanations for the actions taken, including a response to what he describes as dishonesty in recent days. The demand for accountability is framed as a topic for discussion at the upcoming Sejm session.
– writes Jabłoński.
