The opposition is calling for Czarnek to resign
The motion for a vote of no confidence in Education and Science Minister Przemysław Czarnek is another act of political theater from the opposition and will lead only to a heated argument, according to PiS deputy spokeswoman Urszula Rusecka in an interview with PAP. The Sejm is slated to review the proposal at its session beginning on Wednesday.
In an interview with PAP, Rusecka of PiS described the motion of no confidence in Education and Science Minister Przemysław Czarnek, which was filed by the opposition and will be considered by deputies at the Sejm session on Wednesday.
She stressed that it is the government and the prime minister who determine the cabinet that forms the council of ministers. This is a new motion for a vote of no confidence in Czarnek within this parliamentary term, she noted. The opposition, as in previous terms, seems to push for removing a minister from time to time, but responsibility for such changes rests with the government and the group entrusted with the reins by the Polish people.
Rusecka described the move as political chutzpah. She argued that the opposition offers no real solutions, only a display of political bravado. Another vote, she warned, would simply ignite the brawl they are seeking to provoke.
Opposition MPs from KO, Lewica, PSL and Poland 2050 submitted a motion early in February calling on the Sejm to withdraw confidence in the minister of education and science. The complaint followed a TVN24 article detailing funds from MEiN grants going to organizations close to PiS. The report noted that millions in grants were spent on new chairs while numerous educational organizations and institutions did not receive any funding from the Ministry’s budget.
In response, Czarnek spoke in the Sejm about what he called a festival of hatred and disrespect toward boards of non-governmental organizations that perform valuable educational work. Government spokesman Piotr Müller stated in early February that he did not doubt the vote of no confidence against the head of the Ministry of Education and Science would be ineffective, and he asserted that the majority would prevail. Müller also noted that during the MEiN case, Czarnek had provided explanations in the Sejm that effectively closed the matter.
