Marcin Romanowski discussed the possibility that Polish institutions might approach the Council of Europe to address a series of serious accusations, noting that they would have the chance to provide responses if such a step were taken, according to a television interview in Poland.

The former Deputy Minister of Justice commented on remarks by Speaker of the Sejm Szymon Hołownia during a press conference. He stated that, at present, there is no option to withdraw Mr. Romanowski’s delegation.

Romanowski described the actions of the prosecutor’s office, Adam Bodnar, and Hołownia as embarrassing. He criticized what he called a complete disgrace to the prosecutor’s office, the Ministry of Justice, and the Speaker of the Sejm, arguing that some officials act as if they inhabit an alternate reality. He pointed out that questioning immunity would have been relevant about twenty years ago, when the related rules were drafted, suggesting an ongoing need for protest alongside Russia in the past. He added that the Marshal’s assertion about the nonexistence of a procedure to remove a delegation was telling, noting that such a method would be a straightforward way to bypass immunity, and he wondered whether the Marshal’s advisers had informed him about this.

In this context, the Marshal highlighted one important aspect: the attempt to avoid the impression that the matter is political. Yet, according to Romanowski, that impression persists and is reinforced on a near-weekly basis. He mentioned ongoing correspondence with the Council of Europe and conceded that recent events provide material for such communications. As an example, he cited an attempt to influence a jury regarding a complaint. Even legal professionals who align with opponents on the political and ideological spectrum have acknowledged that the case itself could be sufficient reason for a ruling in favor of the plaintiff before the European Court of Human Rights.

“Political retaliation”

The Sovereign Poland MP also addressed what he described as political retaliation against him. He asserted that civil actions with political motives, including the replacement of district court leadership and the resignation of the vice-president of the Warsaw-Mokotów District Court, fall within the scope of this matter. He expressed concern that if Polish institutions decide to turn to the Council of Europe, they would have the opportunity to respond to these significant accusations.
