During a speech following a meeting of the Political Council for Law and Justice, Jarosław Kaczyński highlighted several key points. He referenced changes to EU treaties and the liquidation of the Smolensk Subcommittee, among other issues. He warned against Poland becoming subordinate to Brussels and commented on Germany’s role while addressing the process of appointing inquiry commissions.

His message stressed that leaders of these committees faced a situation where their work touched decisions made legally, and sometimes under pressure that borders on constitutional. He argued that this backdrop feeds a troubling image and that events in the EU are part of a broader design. He warned that a plan for a centralized state in Poland could lead to a total subordination to Brussels, with Berlin often acting in parallel. He called for opposition and unity as the most important course of action.

– he stated.

Smolensk Subcommittee

The council described a resolution that clarifies the committee’s report: an attack allegedly organized at Putin’s initiative. Abolishing the committee would be seen as a major concession to Putin. Forty years have not passed since the event, and Putin remains a focal point in global discourse. An assassination attempt on a head of state is rare among leaders, and it would be risky for Putin if world opinion, and the politicians shaping global outcomes, were to acknowledge such an incident.

Decision of the Political Council for Law and Justice

The Political Council for Law and Justice protested against the Ministry of National Defense head Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz’s unlawful move to liquidate the Smolensk Subcommittee, as noted in a council resolution adopted on Saturday.

On Saturday, the PiS headquarters hosted a council meeting where a resolution was adopted criticizing the Ministry of National Defense decision to dissolve the Subcommittee on the Reinvestigation of the Smolensk Disaster.

On Friday the ministry announced that Deputy Prime Minister and defense head Kosiniak-Kamysz and Deputy Minister Cezary Tomczyk had signed a decision to establish a subcommittee under the ministry to withdraw defense resources from the re‑investigation of the 2010 Tu-154 crash. At that time, all authorizations and powers for subcommittee activities were withdrawn from its members.

In the near term a special team would be created to assess all facets of the liquidated subcommittee’s work, the ministry stated.

On Saturday, Antoni Macierewicz, the subcommittee chair, stated that Kosiniak-Kamysz’s position was illegal and that he could not issue decisions that liquidate the subcommittee. The minister also had no authority to decide on the submission of documents and other elements of the subcommittee’s activity by the chair within four days of the subcommittee’s planned end, August 2024, according to Macierewicz.

– he commented.

The Political Council for Law and Justice condemned the illegal move by Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz to liquidate the Smolensk Subcommittee, the PiS council resolution noted.

The authors of the resolution also protested the unlawful act of ignoring the subcommittee’s report about the attack that led to the assassination of President Lech Kaczyński and the national elite on April 10, 2010, as stated in the resolution.

The Polish nation should recognize that the Smolensk crime marked Russia’s first strike against a NATO member and signaled the onset of today’s Russian aggression. The PiS council declared its support for continued work by the Smolensk subcommittee team.

– the council emphasized.
