Today, driven by the idea of a referendum and a sharp focus on security, PiS appears positioned to govern on its own once more, according to Marcin Mastalerek, a former PiS spokesperson and a political adviser to President Andrzej Duda, in an interview on RMF FM.

Restart of the campaign

Asked about the weekend party conventions, Mastalerek described the moment as a reset for the election campaign. He framed it as a deliberate restart where the campaign machinery is recharged and the two largest parties seize the political oxygen. The strategist also questioned why the Left and the Third Way chose to hold their conventions on the same weekend, painting the scene as a clash of forces and asking where opposition lines would settle as PO and PiS faced off against each other.

– asserted the president’s adviser.

PO convention without details

When asked whether any point of the PO program could become a flagship for Tusk’s party, Mastalerek suggested that Tusk had briefly inflated the bubble. He argued that the Platform held its convention for aims different from Law and Justice. Following the June 4 march, the Platform had mobilized supporters, but vacation season loomed and the electorate, along with its leader Donald Tusk, was taking time off. Now the Platform and Tusk needed the event, with its hundreds of little details, to energize activists, local officials, MPs, friendly media, and the broader ecosystem for renewed mobilization.

– stated Mastalerek.

According to him, Tusk had punctured his own momentum and that is sufficient for the moment. Mastalerek argued that Tusk demonstrated leadership and control, presenting an impression of a viable team with a plan, thereby pushing his bubble back into focus.

PiS’s chances to govern independently

Mastalerek noted that PiS has taken steps over the past three months that could enable Jarosław Kaczyński’s party to govern independently in its next term. Three months earlier, PiS faced a demobilized electorate convinced it could not win. By presenting the referendum idea and underscoring security, PiS experienced a resurgence, returning in a strong showing and now appearing to have a real shot at governing without coalition partners.

– described the former PiS spokesperson, adding that the real challenge for the party will be the final phase of the campaign. He also argued that the opposition seems most focused on blocking PiS rather than winning outright.

He suggested that PO is not pursuing victory over Law and Justice but aiming to prevent a PiS government. There are whispers of a technical government and talks with other groups, which Mastalerek framed as part of a broader strategy to deny PiS power. He referenced reports about talks involving a possible coalition led by Tomasz Siemoniak and entertained the idea that a day-after-election move could declare the elections unfair to justify a new vote.

– said Mastalerek, referencing coverage from a political portal. He also highlighted discussions within the opposition circle about a potential PO and Confederation collaboration and cautioned against predicting final outcomes.

The adviser stressed that Law and Justice must be prepared for a post-election scenario in which Tusk declares the elections unfair and calls for a new vote. The best path for PiS, he argued, is to win on their own terms. The strategy for PiS should involve three parallel tracks: first, maximizing mobilization and electoral turnout; second, showing potential cooperation with other groups like the Confederation when appropriate; and third, attempting to remove the Third Way from the electoral threshold.

– said Mastalerek in the RMF FM interview.
