Monika Piątkowska, running as an independent candidate and supported by the Civic Coalition KO, the PSL, and the Links, won the supplementary Senate election in Kraków’s District 33. She finished with 50.14 percent of the votes and will take the mandate formerly held by Bogdan Klich of KO. The turnout was 16.52 percent.

Official results published by the National Electoral Commission on Sunday evening show Piątkowska with a tally of 25,022 votes, supported by the Civic Coalition. The second place went to Mateusz Małodziński, the Law and Justice policy candidate allied with the KWW For Kraków, who earned 31.41 percent of the vote, or 15,675 votes. Adam Roman Berkowicz from the Confederation Freedom and Independence received 10.47 percent (5,223 votes), while Ewa Małgorzata Szeka of the KWW obtained 7.98 percent (3,982 votes).

The turnout stood at 16.52 percent. Nearly 303,800 residents from Kraków’s southern and western districts as well as the Old Town were eligible to vote. The election was ordered by the President after Bogdan Klich resigned to assume the role of chargé d’affaires at the Polish Embassy in Washington.

Piątkowska outlined five goals she would seek as a senator. Three focus on Kraków specifically: securing funding for a metro project; upgrading Balice airport with a Category III landing system to enable safer operations in fog up to 100 meters; and advancing the construction of Pychowicka and Zwierzyniecka avenues.

Two national priorities concern women’s rights and safety. On women’s rights, the KO-backed candidate supported measures to align wages for women with those in the same positions held by men. On safety, she highlighted food security and proposed restoring food safety as a separate department within the Government Administration Act.

In the past Piątkowska was connected with PSL and Polska 2050. She played a role in Kraków’s branding during Jacek Majchrowski’s tenure as mayor, contributing to the city’s image, and has since held leadership roles within city governance and local business circles.

Kraków is divided into two Senate districts, numbers 32 and 33. Bogdan Klich of KO won district 33 in October 2023 with about 71 percent of the vote. In district 32, covering the northern and eastern parts of the city, Jerzy Fedorowicz won with roughly 67 percent, defeating Zbigniew Cichoń of PiS.
