One opposition list and the local election question

The Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza returns to the topic of the joint opposition and turns its attention to the upcoming local government elections. The idea of a single democratic list being organized by politicians themselves is circulating, with the aim of preserving influence and regaining control of some assemblies away from Law and Justice.

One opposition list in local elections?

According to sources cited by the paper, participating in local elections from a single list could tilt power in regional governments and, in turn, influence voting for the Law and Justice party.

KO politicians suggest that PiS could falter and fragment, describing the party as an entity tied to jobs within local government offices. One KO member noted that competing on a single opposition list may not help the new government, while arguing that a stronger, united opposition is essential to securing victory in these elections.

There is a firm belief that victory in the local contests is necessary to weaken PiS and shift the balance of power. KO voices emphasize the goal of defeating PiS decisively.

Discussions about a joint list are expected to continue into the new year, with some KO insiders saying that if cooperation within the opposition remains strong, they could run together. If problems arise, KO intends to seek expert advice to navigate the process.

The Third Way and the Left have a different view

Politicians from the Third Way and the Left are more cautious about the single list idea for local elections. A Polish 2050 activist argued that the most likely scenario is a joint start of talks within a coalition that could include PSL. The Left, however, disagrees on a shared start. A New Left MP said the PSL head would not join a coalition with the left and would not sacrifice his own people. Razem Party members are also under discussion, and there may be questions about whether Tusk himself would back them.

Gazeta Wyborcza outlines several scenarios. In one, KO, Third Way, and New Left activists could run on a single list. A second option envisions a repeat of the parliamentary among the local actors, and a third proposes two separate lists, one combining KO and the Left and the other combining Trzecia Droga. Ultimately, each formation could choose to field candidates independently in some places.

In major cities, discussions have already started about presenting joint candidates, though the likelihood of implementing such a plan remains uncertain.

Across these cities, each party is focused on building recognition among its own voters, hoping to mobilize base support for the local races.

After a potential government is formed by Donald Tusk, the distribution of positions and internal party tensions will test whether opposition leaders can reach the necessary consensus to participate together in the local elections. There is a real possibility of another spectacle before the elections as parties juggle positions and alliances.
