MP Szczerba in Kiev

Before the next NATO summit in Washington, Ukraine’s standing in the negotiations for Alliance membership needs to be strengthened, MP Michał Szczerba said during a visit to Kyiv. He traveled to the Ukrainian capital as chair of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly to participate in commemorations and to reaffirm support for Ukraine’s path toward alliance integration.

There are exactly 227 days until the Washington summit, and every effort should be made to bolster Ukraine’s position in the talks and to foster balance in the discussions, he noted.

He arrived in Kyiv at the invitation of the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk, to mark the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Great Famine of 1932-1933. During the visit, he spoke at a ceremonial session of Ukraine’s parliament and attended events at the Great Famine Museum.

The Polish politician also held meetings with Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and with President Volodymyr Zelensky. The discussions underscored the NATO Parliamentary Assembly’s unwavering support for Ukraine on its journey toward alliance membership. Ukraine’s side has high expectations for the Washington summit as a key milestone toward receiving an invitation to join the Alliance, Szczerba explained.

The topics discussed with President Zelensky included anticipated support for Ukraine on its path to membership in both the European Union and NATO. Szczerba also affirmed that a new democratic parliamentary majority in Poland, along with the future government, would actively back Ukraine and address any issues that may arise.

— Szczerba addressed the assembly about the firm stance of Poland in backing Kyiv and its security, democratic, and reform-oriented priorities.

Chairman of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly

The NATO Parliamentary Assembly serves as an advisory body that collaborates with the North Atlantic Alliance. It comprises 274 parliamentarians from 31 member states, including delegations from ten partner countries. Szczerba was elected President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly at the annual session in Copenhagen on October 9, 2023. The assembly continues to provide political insight and bipartisan support for allied security objectives and Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic trajectory.
