The Green Alliance and Podemos announced a joint coalition that will run together in both regional and municipal elections scheduled for May 28. The two parties signed the pact this Tuesday, formalizing their union.

Among the attendees were Héctor Illueca, a candidate for the Presidency of the Valencian Generalitat; Pilar Lima, Podemos Valencia mayoral candidate; Marisa Saavedra, United We Can deputy in Congress and Valencian Courts candidate for Castellón on the Podemos slate; Juantxo López Uralde, coordinator of Alianza Verde; and Julia Álvaro, coordinator of Alianza Verde for the Valencian Country.

Illueca stressed that the two movements overlap in purpose, showing that politics can be a means to address the real needs and concerns of people. The agreement centers environmental commitment as a core value, arguing that the current way of life and production is socially unjust and environmentally unsustainable. He stated that a narrow political space is required to chart a different path, one that guarantees social rights through an ecological ceiling and floor. The alliance advocates a shift in the production model, tourism development guided by public planning, and energy policies that harmonize with environmental protection and livable communities, especially in districts and cities increasingly shaped by tourism and rising housing costs.

Environmentalist MP Uralde from Alava noted that Podemos and Alianza Verde bring a history of joint action at state, regional, and municipal levels, now agreeing to contest the elections together. In Valencia, May is a strategic moment, mirroring developments in other regions. He warned against a merger with right-wing and denialist forces, saying they threaten progress and ongoing initiatives from recent years.

Álvaro outlined the proposal as a way to recalibrate political power toward a more transformative governance that prioritizes popular sovereignty, public services, and the defense of general interests. He criticized old proposals that would expand the Port of Valencia or mismanage water, and argued for inclusive policies like equitable water access and environmentally sound planning that benefits all communities.

Pilar Lima and Marisa Saavedra reiterated that ecological transformation must be central, stressing that environmentalism, feminism, and robust public services will be the backbone of their program. They referenced a large-scale photovoltaic project named Magda, emphasizing that such initiatives could orient energy strategy across regions, regardless of geographic location.

The alliance commits to expanding rights and freedoms, advancing gender equality, reducing inequalities, strengthening democracy, and shaping policies that protect public welfare while safeguarding nature. They advocate ecological planning that ensures consumption remains within the planet’s capacity to renew itself, aligning with a broader public interest.
