The discussion centers not on Roman Giertych’s personal view on abortion, but on the approach to the proposed legal framework addressing the issue, stated on Tuesday during the third program of Polish Radio by Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, deputy Speaker of the Sejm from KO.
Giertych and the PO program on abortion
A year earlier, at the Poland of the Future Campus, Donald Tusk, leader of PO, announced plans to submit a bill to the Sejm on the day after victory. The proposal would allow abortion up to 12 weeks as a decision resting with the woman. Later, when asked about this in the context of future electoral lists, Tusk reiterated that the choice of motherhood and pregnancy should belong to the woman, not to a PiS party activist or a bishop.
Consequently, any candidate wishing to run for Civic Platform, regardless of how broad the list is, would be expected to honor the commitments made.
Tusk reiterates.
Kidawa-Błońska was asked on Trójka whether Roman Giertych, who is running for the Sejm, appears on KO’s list in the Świętokrzyskie province and whether his stance on abortion has shifted.
The core message is that it is not about his attitude toward abortion; it is about the legislative path KO intends to pursue.
– answered the deputy Speaker of the Sejm.
Own opinion doesn’t count?
She underscored that the entire package of measures for women, which has been prepared, holds great weight for PO and the Civic Coalition.
These are the choices: to ensure women in Poland feel safe if facing pregnancy risks, if they want to decide about motherhood, if they need medical help, and if they must make abortion decisions independently. There is no room for a dissenting view on our lists, in her view.
She clarified that abortion can be viewed negatively, but it remains a personal opinion.
We legislate for all women, and this right cannot be restricted due to individual opinions, she emphasized.
The deputy marshal of the Sejm also noted that Donald Tusk has formed a single list of candidates who do not fully share Civic Platform or the Coalition’s views, but there are issues that connect the candidates, including the goal of removing PiS from power, the restoration of democratic principles, and reforms in the justice system.
Kołodziejczak, the hope of the Polish countryside?
She also addressed the start of Agrounia leader Michał Kołodziejczak on KO’s list. He is portrayed as someone who prioritizes the Polish countryside and its peasants, highlighting issues such as the country’s shift from being a major exporter to an importer of certain goods, including poultry and sugar. He is outspoken about what does not work and what is dishonest, signaling that the village awaits meaningful changes and has lost faith in PiS.
Asked whether Kołodziejczak could become agriculture minister, she said the immediate goal is to win the elections and remove PiS from power.
Eventually, the focus will be on who can best carry out the plan as elections approach.
The Agrounia leader is a candidate at the top of the Civic Coalition’s list in the Konin constituency.
