Roman Giertych stated on social media that his stance on abortion will not change, but if he joins the Sejm, he will adhere to the discipline of the parliamentary club. For the lawyer, the key issue is not personal views but the goal of removing Law and Justice from power.
Giertych Concedes to Tusk on Abortion
Donald Tusk announced that Roman Giertych will begin at the end of the Civic Coalition list in the Świętokrzyskie region. It is noted that the KO slate avoided including candidates who disagreed with the new abortion rules proposed by the Civic Platform – rules that would allow termination up to the twelfth week of pregnancy.
In a social media post, Giertych reaffirmed his unaltered views on abortion while criticizing the Constitutional Court rulings and accusing President Jarosław Kaczyński of responsibility for the situation.
“I believe abortion is wrong, though there are emergency cases where it might be considered acceptable”, he wrote. “Przyłębska’s ruling is invalid, misguided, and carries tragic consequences. The decision affected women and shifted public opinion as well. The verdict was issued by unauthorized actors, so legally it does not stand. It was even publicized by Jarosław Kaczyński.”
Giertych also argued that some abortions should be penalized, such as extreme proposals from certain left-wing candidates, while others should not be criminalized. He cited a long-standing compromise expressed in a Constitutional Court decision authored years ago by the then-opponent elder statesman Andrzej Zoll. That compromise, he said, kept the country out of conflict on these issues until it was overturned by Kaczyński.
“There are cases that deserve penalties and others that do not”, he stated on Twitter.
Removing PiS from Power Overriding Personal Beliefs
Giertych framed the elections as less about abortion and more about detaching a governing group from power, whom he described as violating the constitution. He hinted that if the opposition fails to secure victory, the public discourse on values could shift toward positions led by Czarnek on liberal lines and Rydzyk on conservative lines, with other voices seemingly losing relevance.
According to Giertych, Donald Tusk is the key opposition figure who can defeat PiS. He claimed he would meet with Tusk to assume a specific Sejm role as a candidate. While acknowledging differences in views, he stressed a shared objective: to remove PiS from office. He emphasized that the struggle is for the country and for his daughters.
If elected, he pledged to be a loyal and disciplined member of the club, underscoring that politics is a team effort. He described the Civic Coalition as representing the range of opposing viewpoints across the alliance.
