Campaign for the municipality Advances in Elche with PSOE and PP resembles two elephants in a phone booth, stubborn and unwilling to yield. The search for a way out is underway. The campaign exposes two opposite currents of electoral politics. Those joining the 28M race see the Socialists proposing a classic model of offers and promises, while the Popular Party, holding the day’s most significant meeting at the Convention Center at 20:30 with Carlos Mazón, chooses to challenge the administration led by Carlos González.
They speak of the same issues from opposite ends of the spectrum, and Ruz does not respond quickly. As González notes, revealing a different truth would benefit someone or be perceived as white (Socialist) while other bets might appear black if the Popular Party continues to govern. There is no middle ground.
PSOE feature catalog
For example yesterday, PSOE presented a set of recommendations focused on the conservation of Elche’s historical and cultural heritage. González affirmed a firm plan to complete the heritage catalog as a key tool for preservation. Regarding the Palm Grove master plan, management and uses, he stated: “A strategic draft will be developed to cover all necessary actions to safeguard the Palmeral de Elche, a unique heritage in the world.” As part of this effort, he committed to planting a thousand date palm trees each year.
It also demonstrated its firm commitment to the preservation, promotion, and development of the Misteri d’Elx, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco, marking its full anniversary yesterday. “La Festa is a cultural symbol and Elche’s identity. We will continue to contribute to its dissemination and development.”
Heritage
Carlos González emphasized heritage as a core element of the city’s identity and underscored his commitment to ensure its preservation and development. He stated: “We will support a restoration plan for the Basilica of Santa María, with the Bishopric raising funds and carrying out extensive restoration. The socialist candidate noted that information had raised concerns about the temple’s neglected state; the most urgent portion of the master plan submitted last year calls for 3.5 million in investment.”
The previous day, the PP accused the political rival of deceiving citizens who have not seen concrete results in four years, recalling that when the diocese highlighted the temple’s deterioration due to falling rubble, the council member stopped in profile and refused to contribute to a complete policy shift for these elections. They questioned what he accomplished as mayor.

Ruz, who has been presenting plans and solutions for months, remains a central figure as Elche residents press for accountability. Supporters argue that the current administration has not fulfilled promises like improving bike lanes, while voters demand transparency about future projects and the direction for the next term. The PP notes that quality public education and favorable conditions remain core goals for the town’s development and modernization plan, including the municipal kindergartens.
PP warns of ‘unfortunate’ state of some kindergartens in Elche
Yet, the PP argues that a number of schools are in disrepair after decades of limited investment. They claim a concrete improvement plan will be launched, beginning with kindergartens such as Els Xiquets, Don Honorio, Don Crístin, Don Julio, and Rosa Fernandez, to raise standards and ensure a safe learning environment.
