Not adapted to reality?

A noted sociologist, Henryk Domański, speaks about Donald Tusk’s leadership style and whether the Civic Platform head will revise his stance to fit today’s political climate. He suggests that even if shifts occur in policy, they won’t come from a complete overhaul of Tusk’s approach. The sociologist argues that the landscape has shifted and new demands exist in society, the economy, and international relations, which should nudge policy in some direction. Still, he sees no reason to expect a radical departure from the core priorities that have guided Tusk so far.

I do not foresee any fundamental new elements in Donald Tusk’s policy. Yet changes are necessary because reality has altered, and there are different needs in society, the economy, and international relations. This is an obvious observation, and from that vantage point, some adjustments are inevitable.

— the sociologist noted.

No adaptation to reality?

The expert clarified his view that the Civic Platform leader might not be the type to quickly shed long-standing habits. In his assessment, Tusk is largely driven by personal ambition and a pursuit of political power, with a focus on the careers of trusted allies and longtime figures who have shaped the party’s inner circle.

However, when it comes to Tusk’s general disposition, the situation is different. The politician’s tendency to keep to familiar patterns remains, in the expert’s view, even as circumstances evolve. Domański points to a pattern where influential roles within the government continue to be held by a consistent group from 2007–2015, suggesting little turnover in key positions.

— he stated.

He also commented on Tusk’s compatibility with current political and social realities. In his opinion, the former flair for political maneuvering has worn thin, and the leader may feel unsettled by the narrative he repeats. A rational reformer would consider changing the core team in pivotal posts; if Sikorski, Sienkiewicz, Budka, or Leszczyna remain in place, meaningful shifts would be unlikely. The bottom line is that Tusk seems unable—or unwilling—to adapt fully to today’s environment.

— the expert noted.

During a Friday press conference, the leader’s uncertainty and the sense that he recognizes a lack of persuasiveness were evident. He appeared ready to criticize PiS and point to budget deficits as a way to defend his campaign promises, yet the delivery did not feel convincing. Consequently, the political course did not show a major transformation in policy.

— he added.

No communication

The sociologist also weighed in on whether the proposed cabinet lineup might stem from fear or distrust among younger Civic Platform activists. Domański stressed the importance of communication between the party leadership and newer, less experienced members.

Donald Tusk seems aware that his rapport with younger Platform supporters is weak. He could take a chance and elevate younger voices, but he appears to find it easier to work with established figures like Sienkiewicz and Sikorski than to engage with newer party members.

— he emphasized.

In this light, it would be easier for him to maintain a cautious, low-risk approach to active political involvement. He seems to prefer peace and a sense of security while avoiding potential rivals. The judgment about communication skills appears to be a more pressing issue than the fear of challenging the younger generation.

— summarized Henryk Domański.
