There is no agreement between the Confederation and the AfD. Participation in the group in the European Parliament, which was co-founded by the German AfD, is the election of three MEPs from New Hope who joined the Europe of Sovereign Nations group. Stanisław Tyszka, Marcin Sypniewski, and Ewa Zajączkowska-Hernik became part of this coalition, with Tyszka serving as vice-chair. The Confederation’s leader, Deputy Speaker of the Sejm Krzysztof Bosak, emphasized this distinction in the PAP Studio.
The Confederation consists of Nowa Nadzieja (formerly KORWiN), Ruch Narodowy, and Konfederacja Korony Polskiej. In this year’s European Parliament elections, the Confederation secured six seats. Three MEPs from New Hope decided to join the Europe of Sovereign Nations group, a coalition that includes AfD among others. Bosak highlighted that there is no formal agreement with AfD.
Bosak stated that members of the National Movement who are MEPs have not joined the AfD-founded group. The individual choice was made by the MPs of New Hope, and Bosak urged anyone with questions to direct them to the MPs, noting it is their decision. He acknowledged cooperation with New Hope but reminded that each member must bear the consequences of his or her own decisions.
Nowa Nadzieja made its own calculations. Bosak said the party judged the benefits to be greater than the losses, while the National Movement’s calculation was the opposite, viewing the losses as greater than the benefits.
The parties had not concluded talks on joining other euro-critical groups before the first European Parliament session, such as Patriots for Europe or European Conservatives and Reformists, which are the other two euro-critical blocs. Bosak noted that a quick agreement with the most radical grouping would have been possible, but longer negotiations could have occurred, implying that National Movement members have no formal ties to the European Parliament at least for now. He assured that MEPs from the National Movement would not join the Europe of Sovereign Nations.
Grzegorz Braun is not engaging in talks
The other Confederation members, besides the New Hope trio, are Anna Bryłka and Tomasz Buczek from the Barefoot National Movement, and Grzegorz Braun from the Confederation of the Polish Crown. PAP information indicates Braun is not in talks, and some PAP sources suggest the EP groups do not want him to join them.
The Europe of Sovereign Nations includes: the German AfD, which has 14 MEPs, three MEPs from the Polish Confederation, three from the Bulgarian Renaissance, and one MEP each from the French Reconquete, the Slovak Republic, the Czech Freedom and Direct Democracy, the Hungarian Our Homeland movement, and the Lithuanian Union of People and Justice. These parties share a common stance against the EU’s migration approach, the Green Deal, and military aid to Ukraine, positioning them in opposition to the mainstream as reported by Euronews.
Romanowski’s detention seen as a political spectacle
Krzysztof Bosak commented that the court did not follow the minister of justice’s dictates. He suggested authorities used a media arrest to create a spectacle, describing it as a tool of political theater, while criticizing depoliticization claims from the prosecutor’s office and arguing that politics remained influential in the system.
He argued that detaining a suspect makes sense only if there is a risk of evasion of the legal system. He added that Romanowski had previously expressed support for abolishing the prosecutor’s office, calling the actions crude social engineering that merits contempt. Bosak argued that the case rests largely on documents from the Ministry of Justice’s prosecutor’s office, supported by house searches and recordings, making manipulation difficult to claim.
He stressed the need for thorough investigations into spending abuses from the Justice Fund, with accountability for guilty officials and ministers. He asserted that Romanowski, like every citizen, deserves a swift and efficient process.
