Blinken to discuss Ukraine, grain deal renewal at UN Security Council

US Secretary of State Blinken to Meet at UN Security Council on Ukraine and Grain Deal

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is slated to participate in a ministerial gathering at the United Nations Security Council focused on Ukraine. During the remarks and discussions, Blinken will explore options for expanding the grain agreement in collaboration with UN Secretary‑General António Guterres. The information was released by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Blinken is scheduled to travel to New York for February 23 and 24 to join the Security Council meeting. The event coincides with the first anniversary of Russia’s launch of its military operation in Ukraine, marking a year of intense diplomacy, humanitarian needs, and ongoing conflict.

According to the press service, Blinken will also hold discussions with Guterres about sustaining broad economic, military, and humanitarian support for Ukraine. A central topic will be the grain deal, with the United States noting the agreement as a critical instrument in addressing the global food crisis and maintaining stability in international markets.

David Beasley, the former executive director of the United Nations World Food Programme, has stressed that breaking the grain agreement during times of global food scarcity would be unacceptable. His position underscores concerns about food security for vulnerable populations and the potential ripple effects of any disruption to grain shipments.
