The Center for Aging, a flagship initiative of the Alicante region’s innovation strategy, continues to advance its early-stage rollout. Initially, the center will operate from a temporary physical base at the Elche Technology Campus. This site will host the initial administrative activities and will be formalized with a lease. A meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday to validate the first action plan and sign the lease agreement.

The Elche Technology Campus will serve as a provisional hub designed to quickly kickstart research aimed at improving living conditions associated with longer life spans. A key objective for the ministry based in Alicante is to strengthen the center’s brand presence as it scales. Within the Elche facilities, the management and administrative units essential to launching the action plan will be defined and staffed as soon as the plan is approved.
Puig announces Elche will host the Aging Research Center
Ximo Puig, former president of the Generalitat, revealed during the general policy debate last year that the Center for Aging would be established in Elche rather than Alicante city proper, contrary to earlier assurances. The initiative, backed by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, positions the center as a multidisciplinary lab dedicated to advancing research that improves quality of life as life expectancy rises across Spain.
Minister of Innovation and Universities, Josephine Good, led the establishment of the new Board of Trustees for the Center for Aging last week, replacing the prior board after a year in operation. Puig serves as honorary chair, with the chair now held by Minister Bueno. The board includes three committees led by Aitana Mas, the Consell’s vice president; Health Minister Miguel Mínguez; and María Auxiliadora Jordá, the regional secretary for Universities.

The center’s leadership and governance will involve a broader group of partners. Founding institutions include the Universities of Alicante and Miguel Hernández (UMH), together with a scientific committee comprising researchers such as María Blasco and Ángela Nieto, among others, and Tonia Salinas, general manager of UMH Science Park. The Board of Trustees will also streamline the recruitment of a scientific director and help shape a roadmap and strategic plan guiding the center’s activities in the coming years.
