The Aging Center is a flagship project of the provincial council in Alicante, led by the Ministry of Innovation and Universities. It is advancing its implementation with a temporary setup at the Elche Technology Campus. This initial space will host the first administrative tasks and will be formalized with a lease. A meeting scheduled for next Tuesday will review the action plan and approve the lease agreement.

Positioned at the Elche Technology Campus, the temporary site is intended to speed up research aimed at improving living conditions for an aging population. The ministry based in Alicante seeks to strengthen the center’s brand as it launches. Within the Elche facilities, the management and administrative unit yet to be defined will handle the forthcoming action plan that will be approved next Tuesday.

Puig Announces Elche Will Host the Aging Research Center

The former president of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, announced during last year’s general policy debate that the Center for Aging would be established in Elche rather than in Alicante, contrary to the initial assurances from the Consell. The initiative, backed by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, positions the center as a hub for interdisciplinary work focused on extending healthy life expectancy in Spain.

Minister of Innovation and Universities, Josephine Good, chaired the establishment of the new Board of Trustees last week, replacing the prior board after a year. Puig serves as honorary chairman, while the chair is held by Minister Bueno. The board includes three committees led by Aitana Mas, the Consell’s vice president; Health Minister Miguel Mínguez; and María Auxiliadora Jordá, the regional secretary for Universities.

The leadership slate for the center includes representatives from the Universities of Alicante and Miguel Hernández (UMH), the founding institutions. The scientific committee features researchers such as María Blasco and Ángela Nieto, among others, with Tonia Salinas, the UMH Science Park’s general manager, contributing as well. The newly formed Board of Trustees will streamline the recruitment of a scientific director and help shape a roadmap and strategic plan that will guide the Center for Aging’s activities over the coming years.

“We want the province of Alicante to become a benchmark in this vital field. Our country is aging, and we need targeted research to boost our quality of life as longevity increases,” states the minister. “The regional government will transform Alicante and Elche into a powerful innovation axis.” [Citation: Generalitat de Catalunya, Ministry of Innovation and Universities, and related regional agencies]
