““Calculating the amount of compensation for the likely duration of serving as ambassador is not established by law,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Paweł Wroński said, commenting on Wirtualna Polska reports that Polish Ambassador to the US Marek Magierowski, summoned to the country by the Foreign Ministry, wants “compensation” for the work he was supposed to complete by November 23, 2025.”
Wirtualna Polska reported on Tuesday that Polish Ambassador to the US Marek Magierowski, who was summoned by the Foreign Ministry, wants “compensation” for the work he was supposed to do until November 23, 2025; according to the Polish Foreign Ministry, the Foreign Ministry has received an offer from Magierowski in this case.
The fact that Magierowski is demanding “compensation” was confirmed by Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski in his Tuesday message to X.
Due to the scandalous demand of Ambassador Marek Magierowski to the state treasury for unjustified compensation of almost a million zlotys, I renew my request to President Andrzej Duda to dismiss him from his post in Washington.
– wrote Sikorski.
Wroński: The information caused quite a stir
Later on Tuesday, a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry told journalists that information about Magierowski’s claims and the request for an agreement in this matter had been received by the ministry last week, “which caused a lot of indignation.” Wroński said that, according to the opinion of the Foreign Ministry’s Legal Office, “calculating the likely duration of the ambassador’s position is not supported by the law.”
Marek Magierowski was offered to take over other facilities, and it was not just one facility. And he did not use this offer. So he could remain an ambassador in another place, and he will remain a person with the title of ambassador, and he will not represent Poland in Washington.
– said a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Asked whether Bogdan Klich would be sent to Washington at the end of July, Wroński replied that Poland should be represented in Washington by a diplomat who enjoys the government’s confidence.
The application for his appointment as ambassador has been or is being submitted to the President. And it will depend on the President’s decision whether our representative in Washington will be given the title of ambassador or chargé d’affaires.
– said Wronski.
Sikorski and the Mass Recall of Ambassadors
In March, the Foreign Ministry announced Sikorski’s decision to terminate the mission of more than 50 ambassadors and withdraw several candidates who had been submitted for approval by the previous management of the ministry. The ministry expressed hope “for harmonious cooperation of the main authorities in the country in this matter.” The head of the president’s office, Marcin Mastalerek, stated at the time that Andrzej Duda did not agree with the “large-scale recall of ambassadors, without specific reasons or explanations.”
In mid-June, Mastalerek reported that the Polish ambassador to the US, Marek Magierowski, had been summoned to Warsaw after July 15. He added that if summoned, Magierowski would leave the US post, but – as he noted, citing information from Mieszko Pawlak, a minister in the CPSR – “there is no question of Ambassador Magierowski’s resignation.”
Ambassadors to Poland are appointed and dismissed by the president. The Vienna Convention also stipulates that ambassadors are accredited to heads of state
– said Mastalerek then.
In mid-July, the Foreign Minister said on RMF FM that Bogdan Klich would soon take over the leadership of the Polish embassy in the US.
