Only three years ago, Poles clearly expressed their enthusiasm about our country’s presence in the European Union. However, as the IBRiS survey for “Rzeczpospolita” shows, the percentage of our compatriots who see more positive than negative sides in Polish membership of the community is decreasing.
Politicians of the current ruling coalition have already managed to proclaim the success of releasing KPO funds for Poland, which, however, was negotiated during the rule of Law and Justice. Already in the days of the United Right, the European Commission often announced the release of money, and then… changed the rules during the game, often under pressure from the left-liberal majority in the EP.
The money was frozen during the PiS government and its release “the day after the elections” was announced during the campaign by future Prime Minister Donald Tusk. In the end it took him more time, but he kept his word. However, the prospect of significant amounts of money flowing from Brussels to the Vistula did not turn Poles into Euro enthusiasts. On the contrary, they view EU membership increasingly lukewarm
– we read every day in the “Rzeczpospolita”. The newspaper describes the results of the IBRiS survey, in which respondents were asked whether our presence in the EU has more advantages or disadvantages. The answer may be surprising, because Poles have always experienced our presence in the EU as absolutely positive.
More advantages or disadvantages?
In response to the question: “what prevails – advantages or disadvantages of Poland’s membership of the EU?”, 53.5 percent indicated the advantages. respondents and defects – 16.7%. According to 24.7 percent, the pros and cons balance each other out
– highlights “Rz” and notes that optimism is decreasing compared to the previous survey conducted in November 2020, when 64.4 percent respondents indicated advantages, 17.1 percent – disadvantages, while the answer “the advantages and disadvantages against each other” was chosen by only 15.8 percent. respondents.
And while the percentage of Eurosceptics, i.e. people for whom our membership of the EU has more disadvantages than advantages, has hardly changed, the number of Euro enthusiasts has decreased by almost 11 percentage points, slightly less by 9 percentage points. has arrived in the group of Poles for whom the pros and cons are balanced.
The greatest increase in dissatisfaction with Poland’s presence in the European Union can be seen among rural residents.
If we look at this phenomenon more broadly, for many Poles, especially the elderly, the world of the past twenty years has become increasingly strange, and they consider the European Union as one of its elements. Second, the costs of being part of the Western world are becoming increasingly visible
– says prof. in an interview with “Rzeczpospolita”. Rafał Chwedoruk, political scientist at the University of Warsaw.
The factor causing the erosion of the belief that the EU only has benefits seems to be the Green Deal, which includes: getting rid of combustion cars
– says the head of the IBRiS poll, Marcin Duma.
Open borders – yes, impose EU laws – no
Respondents were asked about the biggest advantages and disadvantages of Poland’s membership of the European Union.
[Jako wady – przyp. red.] Usually they indicated the EU imposes laws that Poland must follow. Agree with this answer 33.8 percent respondents, who indicated in the following places: unequal treatment of countries (30.5%), migration (12.5%) And Poland as cheap labor (4.6%)
– we read in “Rz”.
In turn, respondents considered the biggest benefits of their stay in the Community: open borders between countries (45.2%), EU funds for Poland (20.6%), increased security of our country (18.9%) And possibility to study abroad (3.7%).
– emphasized.
The European Union has moved away from the principles and values that guided its Founding Fathers, as repeatedly pointed out by experts such as Prof. Zbigniew Krysiak. Fighting or threatening conservative governments before they even start work seems far below criticism (this was the case with Italy’s current Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, among others).

The Poles have probably recently noticed the hypocrisy when it comes to the “rule of law”, which has been changed in every possible case in the EC and the European Parliament, and then, after further undemocratic and not very legal actions of the December 13 Coalition, Ursula von der Leyen announces that the rule of law has been saved and announces the release of funds from the KPO.
