Hanukkah should not have taken place in the Polish Sejm, but since it was there, there was no point in rushing in with a fire extinguisher, said Sławomir Mentzen, co-chairman of the Confederation. According to him, the Confederation will lose its image due to the behavior of Grzegorz Braun, and possibly also the position of deputy chairman of the Sejm.
Confederation MP Grzegorz Braun disrupted Jewish Hanukkah celebrations in the Sejm by extinguishing lit Hanukkah candles with a powder fire extinguisher. The Presidium of the Sejm punished Braun by denying him half his salary for three months and his full allowance for six months. Yesterday, the Confederation suspended Braun as a club member and banned him from speaking from the parliamentary podium.
““Current Blackmail”
Mentzen pointed out on YouTube that both sentences have a certain duration.
We don’t know when they will end
– added.
He noted that the suggestion of the chairman of the Sejm, Szymon Hołownia, that if the Confederation does not exclude Braun from the club, Krzysztof Bosak will lose the position of deputy marshal is “gross blackmail”, and that “Hołownia succeeded in to help” so that he would not be expelled from the Confederacy.
We will not succumb to this kind of pressure. Only the Konfederacja club will decide who is in this club. We will not give in to this matter, even if it costs Krzysztof Bosak the position of deputy marshal.
said Mentzen.
He emphasized that Braun should not have grabbed the fire extinguisher and that such an incident should not have happened. At the same time, he believed that Hanukkah should not be present in the Polish Sejm.
The first Hanukkah in the Polish Sejm was probably 17 years ago. She wasn’t there before. Likewise, in the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, there is no sharing of Christmas waffles, no singing of Christmas carols, and no one complains about it.
– said the Southern politician.
As he said, since the ceremony of lighting Hanukkah candles took place in the Polish Sejm, it was impossible to get there with a fire extinguisher. As a result, according to Mentzen, in the future no speaker of the Sejm will probably dare not to celebrate Hanukkah in the Sejm, because it will immediately be associated with ‘Braun’s action’.
The Confederation co-chairman also said that the message has gone out that there is anti-Semitism in Poland and that Jews “are being treated with a fire extinguisher in the Polish Sejm.” According to him, such a message is a gift to Israel in a situation where it is criticized for the attacks on Gaza.
Mentzen argued that Braun’s behavior also provides an argument for attacks on Catholic rituals. Moreover – as he said – the Confederacy itself would lose as a result of Braun’s act.
We will be seen as fire extinguishers. Braun will be excluded from the European Union committee, an important committee (…) and it would be better if he was there
– he assessed.
Will the bare foot have an adverse effect?
As he continued, it is very likely that Krzysztof Bosak will lose the position of deputy marshal.
We need this function. First, it is important for prestigious reasons. Second, it builds Krzysztof Bosak’s political position. Thirdly, it is extremely important that we know what is happening in the Presidium of the Sejm. We need this deputy marshal and perhaps as a result of Grzegorz Braun’s activity we will simply lose him.
Mentzen said.
He also stated that the behavior of the left, which filed a motion to dismiss Bosak, is hypocritical. He compared Braun’s extinguishing of Hanukkah candles to left MP Joanna Scheuring-Wielgus’ disruption of Mass, saying he condemned both acts.
Mentzen also referred to today’s renewed ceremony of lighting Hanukkah candles in the Sejm, with the participation of President Andrzej Duda and Chairman of the Sejm Szymon Hołownia, among others.
The Confederation politician pointed out that Marshal Hołownia had invited Krzysztof Bosak to participate in the ceremony.
Forcing someone to participate in religious ceremonies is a crime. Secondly, how can someone be forced to attend a religious ceremony of another religion?
Mentzen asked.
Yesterday, the Marshal of the Sejm, announcing the next Hanukkah candle-lighting ceremony during the conference, said: “I hope that Marshal Bosak will also be at our side. It would be very necessary.”
