“Donald Tusk pursued a very clear policy, mainly focused on his own interests and retaining power,” said Prof. in an interview with wPolityce.pl. Henryk Domański, sociologist, former director of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Henryk Domański considered what changes – if any – might occur in Donald Tusk’s policies and approach if he becomes head of government.
I do not expect any fundamentally new elements in Donald Tusk’s policy, although they should be there, because the reality has changed somewhat and there are different needs, both in society, the economy and international relations. This is an obvious thing and from this point of view some changes need to happen
– said the sociologist.
Not adapted to reality?
The scientist clarified that in his opinion, the leader of the Civic Platform is not the type of person who easily and quickly revise old habits. In this context, he assessed Tusk as focused on achieving personal success and a career as a politician.
However, when it comes to Tusk’s attitude, which is a completely different matter, I don’t expect any changes. People don’t change that much, and Donald Tusk pursued a very clear policy, mainly focused on his own interests and retaining power. For this he used specific people from the then elite of the Civic Platform from 2007-2015. As the composition of the Council of Ministers presented by him shows, the most important functions are largely fulfilled by the same people
– he declared.
Prof. Domański shared his observation about Donald Tusk’s compatibility with current political and social realities. He revealed that in his opinion the PO leader’s former flair has worn off and Tusk feels insecure in the story he constantly repeats.
A politician who thinks rationally and wants to change something would change his team in key positions. If Sikorski, Sienkiewicz, Budka or Leszczyna are actually there, I wouldn’t expect any changes. However, the basic factor is that Donald Tusk cannot change, and his statements show that he is even less adapted to the current reality.
– he pointed out.
During Friday’s press conference, the PO leader’s uncertainty and the fact that he himself realizes that he is not convincing were visible. This is because he clearly wants to attack PiS and accuse it of injustice and budget deficits, making it impossible for him to fulfill his election promises, but he is not very convincing. So I don’t think there has been a particularly significant change in his policy
– he added.
No communication
The sociologist also commented on the suggestion that the proposed composition of Donald Tusk’s cabinet may be motivated by fear and distrust of younger Civic Platform activists. Domański pointed out an important aspect of the leader’s communication with the “party bottoms” and politicians with less experience.
Donald Tusk knows he has poor communication with young Platform activists. He could take a risk and appoint more young people, but he is aware that it is easier for him to deal with Sienkiewicz, and especially Sikorski, than with his party’s young politicians.
– he emphasized.
In this context, it will simply be easier for him, and this is another feature of Donald Tusk, who has a rather moderate attitude to a very active involvement in politics. He would rather have peace, but at the same time a feeling of complete security and elimination of risks associated with possible rivals. I think the lack of communication skills here is more important than the fear of competition with the younger generation
– summarized Prof. Henryk Domański.
