Wang Lutong, Director of the European Department of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at the briefing held after the China-EU summit that Russian President Vladimir Putin made decisions regarding the situation in Ukraine based on national interests. This was reported by RIA News.
According to Wang Lutong, European politicians sometimes urge Beijing to talk to Putin about the need to withdraw its troops from Ukraine, but the Russians are “a very independent nation.”
“President Putin makes decisions based on national interests and security,” he said.

“Our priority is Ukraine. We need China to use its influence with Russia to stop the conflict,” he said in response to a question about the EU’s priorities at the EU-China summit on December 7.
In addition, the European Union will ask China to interact with Ukraine and participate in relevant meetings according to the “peace formula” proposed by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.
