“Gazeta Wyborcza” returns with the topic of the joint opposition list – this time it is about the upcoming local government elections. As mentioned, the idea of creating a ‘single democratic list’ by politicians themselves is being circulated, and the aim is to ‘maintain power’ and ‘take back some assemblies from the hands of Law and Justice’.
One opposition list in local elections?
According to interlocutors from “GW”, participating in local elections from one list will result in taking power in local governments, which in turn will influence the vote in Law and Justice.
Kaczyński’s party will fall apart. They will simply fall apart, there will be nothing left, because it is an organization related to jobs in local government companies and offices.
– argued one of the KO politicians, adding that “fighting on the side of the opposition and competition on many lists will not favor the new government.”
It is clear that we have to win these elections. PiS must be completely defeated
– argue KO politicians.
The issue of the joint list should be analyzed in the new year so that the possible government formed by the opposition can become stronger. For his part, an “influential MP” from KO said that if cooperation between the opposition is good, they will go to the elections together. In case of problems, KO will call on expert advice.
The Third Way and the Left have a different view
Politicians from the Third Way and the Left are less optimistic about the idea of a single list in local elections. The Polish 2050 activist said that “the most likely scenario is a joint start of the meetings in coalition with PSL.”
In turn, the left sees no common beginning at all. The New Left MP said the PSL head would not agree to one list because he “would not leave his people in a coalition with the left.” Razem Party politicians are also under discussion, and Tusk may have doubts about them as well.
According to “Gazeta Wyborcze” there are several options. In the first scenario, activists from KO, Third Way and New Left will run from one list. The second option assumes a repeat of the parliamentary elections, and the third two lists – one includes KO and Left, the other includes Trzecia Droga. Ultimately, each formation can go to the elections separately.
In the case of major cities, the opposition is already in discussions about presenting joint candidates, but this idea is unlikely to be implemented.
In all these cities, each party wants to build recognition for its own population
– explained.
After the possible formation of a government by Donald Tusk, the division of positions – which are already causing a lot of emotions – and internal problems within the parties, will the opposition politicians be able to reach sufficient agreement to participate together in the local elections? Or perhaps another spectacle awaits us, as in the case of attempts to reach an agreement before the parliamentary elections?
