Long ago, when political correctness didn’t apply, male youths (then one of two) devoured a series of books by Karl May about the heroic red-skinned chief Winnetou and his white friend Old Shatterhand. Jokes were also made about these heroes, how they sit in a wigwam in the company of other Indians, smoke a pipe of peace by the fire, and when one of the Indians comes out of the wigwam, suddenly there is a bang, he comes back with a bump on his forehead, and quietly sits down by the fire again. Then Winnetou comes out, a bang is heard and he too returns with a bump on his forehead and silently rejoins the group of companions. At last Old Shatterhand comes out, and when he too appears with the hump, Winnnetou breaks the silence and says, I see my white brother has also stepped on this rake. I don’t think I need to explain the moral of this story.
The last days and the start of the Civic Platform election campaign are a few of those unfortunate clashes with rakes, sometimes put in front of their wigwam by members of this largest opposition party at their own request.
Rake #1: Manfred Weber
The President of the European People’s Party, Manfred Weber, fell on the rake (nb a tumor not only on himself, but also on PO and Tusk) who replaced Donald Tusk some time ago, who was surprisingly suddenly dismissed from this position, ie the de de facto European leader of our opposition leader. Willingness to help the struggling Tusk (probably the assessment of EPP colleagues) with the task of reconquering Poland from the hands of “nationalist” authorities, standing in the way of subordinating Poland to the interests of European Eurocrats, ensuring ensuring that their patrons moved without resistance to some eastern country claiming the same rights in the Union as the largest, the “reform” of the EU is huge. The current strategy, aimed at “starving” our country, using European institutions (CJEU and EC) to discipline with fines and subsequent resolutions to make Poland repulsive in the eyes of enlightened Europeans, is proving ineffective, which leads those in power in Brussels (this is not synonymous with the Belgian government) to desperate steps and impotent anger, resulting in threats and arrogant promises to clean up with the help of the national EPP delegation in the form of Civic Platform and its chairman .
When the threats of a firewall that Manfred Weber wanted to raise, who announced in June and declared “we are the only force that can replace PiS in Poland” did not have the expected effect and only caused a wave of unflattering comments, not only among politicians of the ruling coalition, but also of many Poles, it might have seemed that Manfred Weber would not step on this rake a second time, because he would be warned by his Polish friend from the EPP that it evokes very negative feelings in his compatriots, even those who view Jarosław Kaczyński’s team with suspicion and could harm the largest opposition party. However, Manfred Weber stepped on the rake for a second time, announcing a few days ago that PiS would be fought because it is an adversary that attacks the rule of law and the media, not a democratic partner. This time the blow with the rake was quite strong, because not only Polish politicians and the public reacted even more ferociously than before, but Weber also made a German one in addition to this Polish bump, because the local media unequivocally judged that Weber hurt the opposition with his statement , PiS aided the election campaign and bilateral relations deteriorated.
Rake No. 2: Pedro Lopez de Pablo
The EPP spokesman, Pedro Lopez de Pablo, decided to respond to Prime Minister Morawiecki’s invitation to the debate, addressed to Weber after his scandalous statement, and placed a rake in front of the PO wigwam, which gave Tusk and PO a huge tumor. Well, he stated that a partner in such a debate for the Polish Prime Minister should be “a representative of the European People’s Party in Poland, Mr. Donald Tusk”. The role of the ombudsman is to speak on behalf of the boss when he himself does not want to fall short of answering questions or it is difficult and inconvenient for him, but unfortunately also to prevent him from answering in certain situations. The tactic of keeping silent is sometimes more effective than saying something stupid, which in turn turns on the boss’s ally.
Rake No. 3: Borys Budka
The point is clear here. He put out the rake himself and was hit himself. At the beginning of the official election campaign, Borys Budka wanted to show off his poetic talent and threw a nursery rhyme from the Toadstools group: “October 15th, we’re going to chase Kaczyński”. Well, he forgot that he has much more experience in this procedure than the president of PiS. After all, it was Budka who ruthlessly and ruthlessly drove Tusk out of the post of chairman of the Civic Platform after his return to Polish politics.
Rake No. 4: Kinga Gajewska
The last appearance at Donald Tusk’s (please don’t be happy, not the last) rally in Legionowo was preceded by support from PO MP Kinga Gajewska, who did not sing, but was tempted to deliver a lyrical and political speech after which she would like to shout “author, author”, although one would have to suspect that Mrs. Gajewska did not reach for a fragment of the classics, but made it up herself:
People are like the wind. Some people go through life and nothing remains of them. Others blow like the wind, like a hurricane toppling these trees. But there are those who blow just in time, so that everything can bloom and bear fruit in time. The beauty of our world will remain after these people, and we will reap this fruit on October 15th. Before us is also the one who blows perfectly: Donald Tusk.
The dictionary of the Polish language gives many meanings of the word “wiać”, so it would be mocking malice to immediately associate it with the colloquial meaning of “run away quickly”. But the vision of a perfectly blowing Donald Tusk in the context of his retreat to Brussels a year before the elections lost by the PO is the first association that comes to mind irresistibly.
However, if Mrs. Gajewska wants to reach for the classics and quote something with this dowry, I would advise an excerpt from “The Ballad of Shaking Trousers” by Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński. Imagine Mrs. Gajewska standing on this dais and reciting:
When the wind of history blows, people grow wings like beautiful birds, while the pants tremble from the pants.
And then He comes in. All white with large white wings. And collected without explanation, they immediately know whose pants are shaking.
Two punches of a Winnetou joke
The Winnetou joke also has a different version of the ending. Old Shatterhand enters the wigwam with a bump on his forehead and furiously asks, “Who put that damn rake in front of the wigwam?” It is not only a racist version, but also has a very different moral. Anyone can be impaled on a rake, but figuring out how they got there is beyond some.
