Ukraine station

When the present bursts, one is torn between nostalgia for the past and nostalgia for utopia. No one knows what to believe or who to trust anymore. Ukrainian musician Serhiy Zhadan gave a similar answer at a meeting in Las Letras’ Madrid neighborhood years ago: “The problem is not whether you are pro-EU or pro-Russian; The problem is that many Ukrainians no longer know what to believe. […] There is also a lot of fear of reality and the future. I am citing a fundamental book to understand Ukraine’s recent history and the path to westernization it took ten years ago. I’m talking about the Ukraine Station. Country by Borja Lasheras, former International Policy and Security adviser to the Spanish government, comments in his article: “Zhadan’s work reflects the dystopian reality left behind by failed utopias and the nostalgia for the past he speaks of. It recreates the submerged post-industrial environment of the east and Donbas, one of the regions longest exposed to the Soviet project, a dead utopia but somehow surviving. It is a world that is not alien to literature (I think now, on the way to Babadağ, Great travel book by Polish Andrzej Stasiuk) and even less for the Slav, which is so evident by the weight of history and the constant suffering it entails.

Borja Lasheras shows us the complexity of Estación Ukraine, a country that is difficult to reduce to a slogan or a corset. Its deep intertwining with Russia, which is not limited to the eastern regions, goes back centuries, for example. sometimes caricatured from Spain – its agricultural wealth – the fruit of a dark country called Chernozem –The double experience of Soviet and Nazi horrors in the 20th century, which made it one of Europe’s main granaries, illuminates the courage of a people determined to fight for survival. On the Ukrainian Holocaust, known as the Holodomor, we read: “A lot has been written about testimonies of what happened at that time, including acts of cannibalism. It is estimated that around four million people in this country died from famine and related diseases between 1932 and 1933. The destruction of the Ukrainian peasantry added to the destruction of the urban elite. and cultural like the executed Renaissance. These crimes had little international repercussion.

Now it’s the opposite. kiev is once again at the center of the European boardThe future of many actors is at stake. First of all, it’s about Ukrainian democracy and its people. Second, the strength of the Union in the face of challenges that seek to jeopardize its viability. And third, a defeat for Russia would mean not only the foreseeable end of the Putin regime, but also profound instability in what we might call a great Russia. And as we learned very well with the fall of the Habsburgs after the First World War, no one comes out of the collapse of an empire unharmed. The Europe of the next decades will be deeply watched by the outcome of this war.. And this fascinating book helps us better understand the complex historical and human density of some of the peoples for whom much of the current fate of Europeans is at stake.
