The last claws of oblivion

The recently passed Law of Democratic Memory (Act of 19 October 20/2022) was, as expected, accepted with great clamor by those who would know why, who saw themselves as heirs of Francoism, or at least supporters of a cloak of it. As the civil war progresses, there is no question of being forgotten or forgotten because of the victims of the barbarism perpetrated by the putschists in the cities and towns it occupied, and the trials that led to the murder of thousands of people in the post-war period, without any assurance. a puppet criminal case.

The only real reason that can be deduced from this eternal attempt to make Spanish society forget what happened in Spain in the 20th century is very likely the result of the interests of the Spanish right, that is, of the individual people. they don’t know what your parents and grandparents are doing. The repressions, murders, gang rapes, chutes full of corpses, concentration camps, exile, the positions of doctors, judges and professors in the Administration, in the cities occupied by the putschists, as the genocidal Queipo de Llano boasted. Invaded by useless people whose only capacity is to be loyal servants of the dictatorship or women and the LGTB collective, they are intended to be forgotten by society due to the fact that they do not want all this to be known. if it was possible to put doors on the field.

Therefore, this law cannot be equal. A group of military putschists cannot be treated the same way against those who defend the Constitution, legitimacy and democracy. It was repeated over and over during the Franco dictatorship that the Republic was a nest of murderers and vipers ruled by ignorant, corrupt people. And strange as it may sound, there were those who believed in such nonsense that it did not even reach the category of big lies.

Thanks to José Luis Aceves, socialist deputy of the Segovia State Congress of Deputies, I was able to read an email from my father, Miguel Ull Laita, to the Undersecretariat of Historical Memory. Association Historical Memory-Segovia, which he chaired and sent to José Luis Aceves. In this email, my father made some comments on the Democratic Memory Act at the time. December 15, 2020, a hospital where my father died three weeks later, a few days before he was admitted to the La Paz hospital in Madrid for Covid-19. In particular, with regard to Article 55 of the preliminary draft, the new M-MD should not collect more than indicated in the explanatory preamble of the Law, VC, (vBeyond the Fallen) in the rest of the text he has to refer to the “buildings of the Cuelgamuros mansion”, that is, to make memory (moral reading of facts) not just history. Relatives and descendants of the 33,000 people “buried” in the crypt of the Cuelgamuros Basilica, and the 120,000 or more still buried in gutters, wastelands, wells, and other worthless places will know how to appreciate the nuance of memory. as well as history. They also have the right to receive the change in nomenclature (the people who still excavate the hillside have relatives) and the State has an obligation to treat them as such.” The reason for this demand is that the 55th article of the Preliminary draft begins with the inscription “Dreams Valley,” “Valley of Dreams is a place of democratic memory that is destined to be reinterpreted…”. Pleased, after reading the definitive Law of Democratic Memory, I affirmed that the Valley of the Fallen under Spanish Rule would never be called that again. It will henceforth be called Valle de Cuelgamuros, so it is very similar to the name my father proposed to the legislator. I’m not too surprised though. My father’s biography is full of performances like this. In the 1980s, he also collaborated in drafting the General Health Act, which provided public and universal health care to Spaniards, in which Pedro Sabando also played a key role. I’ve never heard him brag about it.

With this law, it is aimed that Spain looks to the future with certainty. This can only be achieved if we Spaniards perceive current democracy as a long road that began in 1812. Since then, tens of thousands of victims have given their lives and their freedom to achieve the political system we Spaniards now have. But above all, it must be said out loud that the victims of the 1936 coup and the Franco dictatorship were right. Defending democracy against the fascism of Franco and his henchmen represented the best of people.
