Democracy is the art of voting for the favorite candidate and belittling the previously defeated. If you are currently told that Feijóo or Sánchez have resigned, who is the candidate most likely to drop out? On the other hand, if the same question had been asked to you six months ago, the result would have been the opposite. This is why conservatives begin to wonder if their leaders want to rule. Polls teach different lessons to different readers, but in the mess of polls there is only one compromise, the Head of Government does not give up.
The PP relied on a Zapatero-style resignation, crushed by the financial crisis, but Sánchez was as responsive as at previous crossroads. The Head of Government tensed but did not give up. The PP leader’s first failure was not forcing significant electoral progress for his ambitions. The calendar has eaten it up, “Ninety minutes in the Bernabéu is molto longo”. Continuing to rule, on the other hand, can unwittingly be an act of rebellion. The drama of falling from above tends to put off presidents who persist and persevere despite everything.
Those who were beset by Moncloa syndrome and diagnosed with the internal exile of a Sánchez without the support of a government under the circumstances had to fold candles before presidential energy. On the contrary, Feijóo arouses indifference, not hostility. He relies everything on his personal hatred for his opponent, but the weakest candidate is the one who has nothing bad to say about it. The comeback reached a point where Sánchez now has more respectable opponents in his inner circle than the opposition. You have to start worrying about Yolanda Díaz who will serve as a rabbit for the first head of government, a Nadia Calviño who can’t hide her urgency, or the talkative but deadly María Jesús Montero. Once the Left decides on one of these, it’s possible that the PP’s opponent will continue to be Isabel Díaz Ayuso as she is today.
