multinational XPO expanded its operating capacity in Alicante with a new logistics warehouse at the Llano del Espartal area. The site spans multiple facilities totaling 5,000 square meters, officially opened this Wednesday. This location stands as one of the province’s principal logistics hubs because it sits close to major operators such as Amazon, Mercadona, Integrated, GLS, and others, creating a dense network for fast, reliable deliveries in both Spain and cross-border flows toward North America and Canada.
XPO’s managing director for Southern Europe, Massimo Marisili, described Alicante as a strategic point in the company’s growth. The choice reflects strong demand from local customers, including Sprinter, and the advantages of the site’s position near rail, sea, and air corridors. Its proximity to the port, the railway network, and Alicante-Elche Airport supports seamless intermodal distribution of goods across the region and beyond, including potential flows to North American markets where customers increasingly expect rapid fulfillment.
The new facilities replace the smaller complex at the Las Atalayas industrial estate. The owner, a firm linked to Montepino and Bankinter’s socimi, built to suit the tenant’s operational needs. The warehouse houses 33 loading ramps and is expected to directly EMPLOY 22 staff, with around 50 carrier partners operating on the site, contributing to a robust local logistics ecosystem that also serves European corridors via Iberia and onward to North America.
Marsili noted that XPO already serves more than 1,700 customers in the Valencian Community, reflecting a turnover of roughly 46.4 million euros last year. In Spain, the company’s revenues account for about 9% of the overall business, underscoring Alicante’s role in its regional strategy. The new facility is already handling a significant workload, with more than 1,000 pallets moved daily, a figure the company expects to double as operations scale. Across the Iberian Peninsula, XPO manages roughly 22,000 pallets across 73 centers, underscoring the scale of its European footprint and its capability to keep goods flowing even as demand fluctuates.
The Alicante center broadens XPO’s regional service catalog to include full truckloads, palletized freight, and distribution services throughout Mille—a segment where growth aligns with the rise of e-commerce. The manager emphasized that the operation has been well received in the market, including a nocturnal distribution service that ensures stores are stocked before opening hours. The program currently serves about 230 businesses in the region, representing a notable share of the company’s regional Spanish network.
Sustainability remains a priority for XPO. The company has been among the early adopters of mega trucks, dual-composition vehicles that cut pollutant emissions by about 20% and ease transfers between road and rail. These trucks are ready to be loaded onto trains, aligning with broader goals to decarbonize freight movement. In Spain, XPO operates a fleet of 25 mega trucks and several duo-trains, contributing to a more efficient, flexible logistics network that can support North American import-export cycles as demand requires.
Major funds target Alicante to invest in logistics and offices
The company, which grew by 12% last year, aims to sustain momentum in the current cycle driven by the ongoing logistics surge. Local leaders welcomed the Alicante expansion as a significant boost for regional commerce and employment, highlighting the city’s appeal as a gateway for cross-border trade and distribution to North American markets via established European corridors. Joaquin Perez, president of CEV Alicante, attended the ceremony along with other public officials. In addition to the mayor of Alicante, Luis Barcala, regional secretary for Sustainable Economy Empar Martinez joined the event. Restrictions tied to the election period limited some participants, but their presence underscored broad support for the investment in logistics and regional office spaces.
