Multinational logistics company XPO has significantly expanded its capacity in Alicante with a new warehouse at the Llano del Espartal range. The facility spans 5,000 square meters and joins several other local logistics sites. The opening, attended by company officials, marks the area as a key logistics hub in the province due to its proximity to major operators such as Amazon, Mercadona, Integrated, and GLS.

XPO’s managing director for Southern Europe, Massimo Marisili, described Alicante as a strategic location for the firm due to growing demand from regional customers, including Sprinter, and because of its accessibility by rail, port, and the El Altet airport intermodal corridor which streamlines the distribution of goods.

The new facilities replace the older Las Atalayas site, which was about half the size. The new warehouse, developed by Montepino, a socimi owned by Bankinter and specializing in logistics, was designed to fit the needs of its tenants. It offers 33 loading ramps and will directly employ 22 people, in addition to the 50 carriers that will operate there daily.

Marisili noted that XPO already serves more than 700 customers in the Valencian Community, contributing to a turnover of around 46.4 million euros last year. The company reported that the European currency accounted for roughly 9 percent of its revenue in Spain.

The newly added facilities are already handling substantial volumes, moving more than 1,000 pallets per day, a figure the executive expects to double as the site scales. Across the Iberian Peninsula, XPO operates 22,000 pallets at 73 centers, a workflow that translates to roughly a pallet leaving every two seconds.

The Alicante center enables XPO to extend its service catalog in the region to include full truckload, palletized goods, and last mile distribution, a segment showing steady growth in tandem with e commerce expansion.

The manager highlighted a service that has gained strong traction: overnight distribution to stores outside of standard hours. The company secures access keys for client stores and delivers products overnight so fresh stock is available at opening. This service already covers about 230 regional businesses and represents around 10 percent of the firm’s Spanish footprint.

The sustainability lead for XPO emphasized that the firm has been an early adopter of mega trucks, dual-configuration vehicles that reduce pollutant emissions by about 20 percent. These trucks are compatible with rail intermodal transfer, making it easier to move goods between road and rail. Spain already operates a fleet of 25 mega trucks, in addition to several dual-tray configurations that support flexible, greener logistics.

Major investment pours into Alicante for logistics and office space

The Alicante expansion comes as the company posted a 12 percent growth last year and eyes continued gains amid a logistics boom. During the opening ceremony, Alicante authorities and business leaders spoke about the region’s potential. In attendance were local officials who underscored ongoing support for logistics and related office development, while officials from the regional government acknowledged the town’s role as a logistics gateway.
