States rolled out a new program aimed at helping those who need support the most. A wallet card initiative with a budget of 100 million euros is designed to assist households experiencing the deepest hardship and living below the poverty line.

Below is a clear explanation of what this aid covers for families in need and how to request a wallet card.

What is a wallet card

The wallet card offers financial support to families living in poverty with the objective of reducing child poverty, a critical issue in this country. With 28.7 percent of children at risk, the situation remains a major concern. The card is intended to provide for basic needs for about 10,000 families each year and to reach a total of 70,000 beneficiary families over the seven years the program will run.

How to request a wallet card

To be eligible, applicants must reside in the home and have minor dependents with income below 40 percent of the national average. Beneficiary selection involves social services across autonomous communities and municipalities. The program will begin in April and, at first, will be administered by organizations such as the Red Cross. Over time, each autonomous community will manage funds provided by the European Social Fund Plus.

What can be bought with a wallet card

Beneficiaries can use the wallet card at participating supermarkets and partner organizations. Purchases of items such as alcoholic beverages or cosmetics are not allowed. The monthly allotment depends on household size, for example 130 euros for a single adult with one child, up to 220 euros for families of five or more.

The wallet card will be used to make purchases at supermarkets participating in the aid program. Information

The wallet card marks a significant shift in how social support is delivered. In the past, the ministry bought and distributed nonperishable foods through food banks and partners like the Red Cross. With the wallet card, families can buy what they need directly from supermarkets, creating a more direct and dignified form of assistance.

Attention is also given to other vulnerable groups. It is important to note that those not in severe poverty, such as elderly individuals with financial difficulties, homeless people, and families with children older than 18, will continue to receive support through food banks and charities.
