Efforts to curb climate change include encouraging the youngest residents to use public transport, establishing sustainable habits and helping cities grow closer to carbon neutrality. The Generalitat Valenciana offers a free transportation program for youths up to 30 years old. Launched on October 9 and running through January 15, 2023, the initiative funds 50% of urban transport for under-30s in participating municipalities, aiming to ease inflationary pressure while promoting greener mobility.
The program marks a continuation of public transport innovations introduced earlier in the year, designed to reduce costs for citizens and support sustainable urban mobility in the Valencia region.
What travelers need to know to ride for free
The Free Youth Temporary Pass applies to trips within ABC zones and supports unlimited travel on Metrovalencia and Metrobus until January 15, 2023. Other networks, including EMT, TRAM d’Alacant, TRAM Castelló, and city buses, have joined the initiative.
New, non-transferable temporary cards are issued and must be linked to a valid identity document, such as a DNI, NIE, or passport. The card’s header and support are provided at no charge.
Anyone wanting to travel for free, regardless of any existing season ticket, must have the new temporary card. The application requires proof of age and identity to verify eligibility.
How to claim a free subscription
Applicants must possess a valid identity document and complete registration on the Metrovalencia or TRAM d’Alacant websites, including email verification.
To obtain the Free Youth Temporary Season Pass, applicants should follow the online steps: log in, select a request date, and complete the submission. Beginning October 17, online registration becomes available on these pages, with a prior appointment required to collect the title. In the second step, the applicant chooses a collection center or station and a time for the in-person appointment. To obtain the Free Youth Provisional Pass, applicants must present the identity document and keep the appointment confirmation (printed or digital).
For in-person pickups, an office is located on Carcagente Street, 1.
FGV manages this initiative in collaboration with the General Directorate of Information Technologies and Communications, responding to high demand for the service and benefiting over 1.5 million residents in the Community of Valencia.
From Monday to Friday, Valencia offers Free Youth Temporary Pass collection points at multiple venues across the city and province.
Weekday collection points in Alicante include locations such as Luceros Customer Point, El Campello, Denia, and Benidorm, among others. The program emphasizes accessible distribution for residents across the province.
FGV also plans to strengthen staff at stations to facilitate the distribution of new subscriptions.
Measures to ease inflation
This year, SUMA has advanced discounts across the Valencia metropolitan area, with reductions on TRAM d’Alacant maps and fares. Since June, prices have been eased by up to 50% to 100% in certain zones, including free service on Sundays during specific periods and additional 30% discounts since September 1 until December 31. These policies aim to support everyday transportation for families and students.
Rebeca Torró, Minister of Regional Policy, Public Works and Mobility, described the measure as a targeted relief for young people and minors, part of broader efforts to reduce transport costs for households dependent on public transit. The initiatives are designed to complement existing transportation savings strategies, with shared goals of expanding access and lowering expenses for the general population and visitors alike.
