The Generalitat President Ximo Puig announced that the Consell will further reduce transportation rates tied to the Generalitat, bringing the cut to 50 percent for the entire first period of 2023. This adds an additional 20 percent discount. A separate 30 percent rate announced by the state is expected to be confirmed, and this Friday’s general meeting will also authorize the extension of a 10 percent reduction in public tariffs and prices, along with the suspension of cleaning fee collection.

The President held a working session focused on boosting public transport with Rebeca Torró, the Minister for Regional Policy, Public Works and Mobility, and María Pérez, regional secretary for Public Works, Transport and Sustainable Mobility. The meeting emphasized coordinated action to expand access and affordability in the region’s transport network.

Following the discussions, Puig announced that 2023 will see the Metrovalencia network strengthened with investments totaling 67 million euros. The enhancements include public disclosures in the first quarter about the layouts of lines L11 and L12 and the extension of L12.

Key projects include extending L10 from Nazaret to Marina de València and Malva-rosa; connecting the city center to the seaside via L11 through the Grau neighborhoods; and introducing a new L12 that will link the city center with four additional kilometers of track to the new Fe de Malilla, the regional hospital center, and the metropolitan area in Valencia. Construction work is scheduled to be ready by summer, with tender specifications for the works prepared in the second half of the year.

Additionally, the Generalitat will offer a 50 percent discount on season tickets and multi-trip passes for regional transportation in January 2023, widening access to the network for residents and visitors alike.

Free transportation for young people

Puig stated that the Generalitat remains a pioneer in expanding access to public transport and in the fight against inflation. He highlighted measures such as extending free public transportation for young people up to age 19. He also announced that, until July 31, 2023, the subsidy covering 50 percent of urban transport will be extended to guarantee free entry for young people up to 30 years old, and for those under 30, to any municipality that opts to participate. This expansion aims to maximize participation and ease for eligible riders.

The 50 percent discount will also apply to SUMA transport tickets, which for the first time integrate Metrovalencia, Metrobús, EMT, and Renfe public transport in the Valencia metropolitan area on a single card and at the same price. This alignment supports streamlined travel and simplified fare structures in the region. Likewise, the 50 percent discount will be applied to all TuiN tickets and temporary passes on Metrovalencia, including the TRAM d’Alacant and Castelló TRAM networks. (Attribution: regional mobility brief, 2023.)

Puig noted that the public transport fare reductions have reached an overall 80 percent decrease since the start of 2022. He underscored Consell’s ongoing commitment to easing family costs during a challenging period and advancing a decarbonization strategy. He added that the initiative reflects continued collaboration with other institutions to expand public transport options, framing it as a cornerstone of sustainable mobility for the future and a step forward for regional resilience.
