Gasoline continued its downward path for a ninth straight week, averaging 1.586 euros per liter after a 20-cent state discount, the price at the pump hitting its lowest level since February. Diesel rebounded for the first time in two months, averaging 1.616 euros per liter.

Both fuels held steady in the latest EU Petroleum Bulletin update, which covers prices collected from more than 11,400 Spanish service stations between August 16 and 22. Even without the public discounts, the per liter cost remains well under the 2 euro mark.

Over the past week, gasoline prices fell by 0.7 percent as part of a ninth consecutive weekly decline, while diesel rose by 0.6 percent after its first uptick since late June.

In the last seven days, petrol reached its lowest level since mid February when it stood at 1.575 euros per liter. Diesel has not been this low since the second week of April, though it rose slightly to around 1.613 euros. Both fuels traded below the prices seen at the end of March, a period when the government introduced a 20-cent per liter bonus for all consumers (EU Petroleum Bulletin).

Excluding the mandatory government discount, gasoline typically costs about 2 euros per liter, with an average around 1.786 euros, while diesel averages about 1.816 euros.

The persistent high price levels for gasoline and diesel since the start of the year largely reflect oil price trends and global supply dynamics. A recent easing in the oil price has begun to filter through to retail fuel prices, helping to soften the burden on households and businesses.

To mitigate the impact of rising fuel costs, the government extended the 20-cent-per-liter bonus for all consumers through the end of the year, ensuring additional relief for drivers across the country.

Despite historically elevated values, Spain’s fuel prices remain below the wider European average once the discount is applied, according to EU statistics. The average price is about 1.766 euros per liter for gasoline and 1.827 euros for diesel (EU Petroleum Bulletin).
